difference between iFCP/FCIP/ iSCSI/FCP

Hi all i am a newbie to storage industry but would like to change my newbie lable , i was going through a doc but got confused with following emerging technologies and protocols can some one explain me whats the difference between 1) FCP 2) iscsi 3) FC/IP and 4) iFCP as per my understand FCP and ISCSI is a replacement of each other means FCP works by encapsulating scsi in to the fiber channel where as iscsi works by encapsulating scsi into IP i also understands that FC/IP is used to bridge multiple SAN's which are geographically saperated using a traditional IP network by encapsulating fiber channel frames within TCP , but please let me know what iFCP its function , and i am very intrested in knowing is it possible to replace any of these protocols with the other one ? i mean do they provide options for each other ? or for some other purpose ? __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Hi, Possibly a bug or reporting difference between DOT 6.4.x and earlier versions. I see a number of pre 6.4.x boxes showing ... slot 0: SCSI Host Adapter 0b (Qlogic ISP 1040B) Fast/Wide, Differential Firmware Version 4.65 Clock Rate 60MHz. (Is that even supposed to work at all?) Can anyone confirm that the output (sysconfig -v) of a F760 "Single-ended" is correct or incorrect? That is, is the on-board external SCSI port a differential or single-ended SCSI port and the "sysconfig -v" message is right or wrong? Snapvault error messages

Hi all i am newbiew to filer and storage , i am eager to know following things but unfortunately m not been able to get the rite pointers which can describe the stuffs in detail 1) How exactly the Fiber Channel works ? what are the stuffs involves in setting up a SAN using a Fiber Channel and what are their functions in details along with the alternative devices that too supports the same functions and can be used 2) what is the purpose of space reservation as far as Netapp's Filer FCP support is concern , why people need space reservation for volumes,qtrees or for luns ? 3) what size of volume i need to have if i want 1 TB of lun ? i have read in docs that i should i have atleast 2-3 times volume size if i wanna have lun on the volume that is for 1 TB of lun i need to have 2-3 TB of volume , where the other storage space being used ? 4) what would be the usable lun storage capacity if i create lun of 1 TB ? how much space will get utilized for partition table and keeping file systems metadata ? 5) is it possible to install more then one HBA's on hosts like solaris , windows mechines ? -- Warm Regards, Prashant Desai

I once had to RMA the motherboard on an old 760. After the swap the onboard SCSI changed from single-ended to differential. Since I was not using the motherboard SCSI it was not an issue for me. I now have two 760s one reports motherboard SCSI as single-ended and the other differential. I suspect there are two different motherboard designs for the 760. Graydon Dodson

You can do it,you must ensure cross network connectivity. If filer A fails,filer B will completely taken over Filer A including Network and Netbios Identity etc.so you have one physikal and one virtual Filer in the same physikal Network Segment. Kerry, 6.4.2P11 is a GA release. Take a look at the the Data Ontap Release Model http://now.netapp.com/NOW/products/ontap_releasemodel/. 6.4.2P6 is a GA release, and was released as GA in September. All subsequent "P" releases will also be released GA.
