clustered filers and CIFS ...

Here's one that I think I know the answer to but I figured I would see if anyone had any comments ... Can a set of clustered filers ... each running CIFS ... belong to two different NT4 domains?? I figure the answer is NO ... since when one of the filers failed the other would not be configured to handle requests for the other domain. Could someone confirm or deny my opinion?? Hi Prashant- I train new sales people at NetApp. My favorite book for an introduction to storage networking is "Using NAS and SAN" by W. Curtis Peterson (published by O'Reilly). This has been required reading for our sales force. A thicker read but also good is "Building Storage Networks" by Marc Farley. I haven't checked the most recent versions for updates but I assume they are updated. syslog, swatch/logsurfer, and you

Hello toasters, I've been thinking of doing some additional monitoring of my filers using swatch or logsurfer. I am currently looking at transcribing what docs I could find on the NOW site to swatch or logsurfer regex, but thought it might be a good idea to see if someone has done this already and would care to share any info with me. I've also looked around the NOW site for actual examples of syslog entries that the filers will generate when something bad has happened, but was unsuccessful in finding anything. Has anyone located or compiled such a list? I googled, searched the toasters archives, etc. No luck. Anyway, let me know if you have anything interesting to share! Thanks, Peter Radavich

DOT 6.4.2P11

I need to upgrade a R150 from DOT version 6.4.1P1D1 to DOT 6.4.2P11 because of bug 102089/Disk spin up errors could lead to wafl hung panic. My system did a system panic and rebooted last week due to this error. I'm a little nervous though about upgrading to a non-GA release. Is anyone out there running this release? (Netapp claims 20 systems are running it). If so any issues with it? Default units for quotas in 6.4.2P6

We have just upgraded from 6.3.3 to 6.4.2P6 (now it is "GA") and suffered a nasty consequence. If an entry in /etc/quotas doesn't specify any of "K", "M" or "G" for the limit, e.g. 261 user@/home 81920 4000 then the units are taken to be bytes rather than (as before, since time immemorial) kilobytes. In the example the limit becomes 80 KB rather than 80 MB. We have a daily useradmin job that runs overnight, and among other things builds a new /etc/quotas from another data source and then does a "quota resize". Our users weren't too happy to have all their quotas divided by 1024 in one swell foop... I have added an explicit "K" now, of course. All the documentation I can find still claims that "The default for the disk limits and warning threshold is kilobytes", so maybe this is a bug. Or maybe it will be reclassified as a feature when NetApp get around to updating the documentation. Anyway, it's something anyone upgrading ought to beware of. Chris Thompson Email: cet1(a)cam.ac.uk

Large directory performance bug? F760/6.1.2R3/Linux/2.4.20

Hi, we have over 20 webservers running a web application and serving all the data off a Netapp NFS mount. Netapp CPU normally sits at around 20-40% and NFS response is good. Today we hit what appears to have been a bug of some sort. All of a sudden, with no apparent increase in client connections, the F760 CPU went to 80-90% and the load on all the webservers rose sharply (from approx 0.5-1.5 up to 15-20). The site response went down the drain (20+ seconds for a page that normally takes under 1 second). It appeared to be caused by the application doing readdirs (along with other operations: read/write/getattr) on a specific directory, which at that time held about 70,000 files. We fixed the problem by disabling the readdirs within the application and also reducing the number of files in that directory down to about 45,000. We don't know exactly which fix (stopping readdirs or removing the files) did the trick, but after that Netapp CPU dropped back to normal and the webservers were happy and the site responsive again. It appeared that the combination of all the operations on the large directory were causing the NFS clients to hang and the Netapp CPU to max out. Although at the same time, other NFS operations were still performing at a reasonable speed (ie, the whole Netapp was not locked up). Any ideas on a bug or limitation on either the Linux or the Netapp side with regards to large (70,000+ files) directories? Maintenance on a filer with FCP connections...

When rebooting a filer that has SAN connections via FCP what is the "proper" procedure? Should all LUNs be unmounted from their respective systems first? Is a sync all that's required or is that even necessary? We have a few oracle databases on netapp LUNs and I need to upgrade the os and reboot. Just didn't want to shoot myself in the foot. thanks, -- Don

ndmp DAR veritas FP3

I was wondering if anyone is using DAR with Veritas which came out in FP3. I am currently upgrading from Maintenance Pack 3 to Feature Pack 3 (and eventually feature pack 5) to get the DAR feature, but I was wondering if anyone had any bad/good experiences to share with DAR and with upgrading veritas to support it.
