Netapp and VMware... It's all so confusing!

So, say for example, I want to virtualize an Exchange server. Lets also say that I want to manage it via Snapdrive and SME. Lets also say, just for the heck of it, that I want both the new front-engined Acura NSX as well as the Porsche RC3. The cars aside, I would have to run iSCSI from within the VM, install and use Snapdrive from within the VM to provision LUNs, install Exchange and then use SME? It seems kind of silly to use iSCSI from within a VM if the ESX box were fiber attached to the Filer, just to be able to use Snapdrive and SME, no? I would love to be able to use the features of SD and SME within a completely virtual environment and am wondering what some real world implementations other VMware/Netapp customers are running. Do you run storage for the databases and logs in VMDK's and manage snapshots and backups from a VMware virtual machine perspective or do you manage them as iSCSI LUNs and use SD and SME? Failed shelf

Hello, We have just been informed by NetApp that we have a failed shelf and a new shelf is on the way. I forgot to ask before I got off the phone if we would be able to use our trial license of SnapMirror to allow us to do this shelf swap over without downtime? This is a FC shelf and we only have enough space to mirror the volumes on to a SATA shelf. Will this work or am I mad? Take care.

SnapDrive makes an API call to expand the NTFS partition and file system within it. (It grows the LUN first.) This can be done with Exchange running. We demo this all the time. Happy holidays!! autosupport stops functioning

anyone else have this happen? suddenly one of our filers stops generating autosupport messages. both autosupport.enable and autosupport.support.enable are on. if i generate a test email with the autosupport.doit option nothing happens. not even a failed message, the console just sits there as if i never generated one. needless to say neither netapp or our email server gets anything from this filer and nothing hits the console about generating any autosupport emails.

Authentication Error

Hi, I am interested in accessing /vol/vol0 from my windows machine and from Linux Machine too. When I try to connect it the following error message appeared "The account is not authorized to log in from this station". On Linux machine I can mount /vol/vol0, but it does allow me to go into mounted directory. My machine is also an administration host of NetApp. Please help. Deleting many large files spikes filer CPU

We have a fairly heavily loaded FAS960c pair that contains storage for our University wide email system. Most of the email storage is NFS files with the email servers running Unix and Communigate Pro. We are transitioning to MS Exchange, so these filers also have some FC SAN LUNs for our emerging Exchange service. The other day we cleaned up about a hundred NFS email inboxes, average size about 100M, but a few were approaching 1G. We removed the files on a NFS client and immediately after the rm command returned, we experienced a serious performance problem on the 960s. sysstat indicated that the CPU was pegged at near 100% while all I/O throughput (network, disk, FC SAN) and all file ops (NFS, FCP) dropped to almost nothing. Something grabbed the filer CPU for a minute or two which seriously impacted all of our email servers. We had to restart them all. I suspect that the CPU load was caused by some processing having to do with recovering disk blocks freed by the file deletes. But no blocks were actually freed because the volume had snapshots that were newer than the deleted files. Perhaps the number of snapshots (41) was a factor. I opened a case with netapp on this, but repeating the problem will have dire consequences on our production email systems, so we can't send them performance metrics. I checked bugs online on NOW and didn't find anything that seemed to apply that wasn't marked fixed. I did see a very old bug (4157) first fixed in DOT 5.1, where WAFL would deadlock if many large files were deleted all at once. I was just curious if anyone else has run into anything like this. We are running DOT 7.2.3. In the future when we delete a lot of big files, we'll do them one at a time, with sleeps in between. Aggr's at 100% with FlexVols

Hi, I know when traditional vols are in use, you don't want to let them get too close to full because performance will be affected. But what about using FlexVols and Aggrs ? I have a few Aggrs that are at 100%. But the FlexVols in those Aggrs are mostly under 50%. I had a NetApp support person tell me that its bad to have Aggrs at 100%, even if the FlexVols are not full. What's the answer here. Does having Aggrs at 100% because the FlexVols contained in them are sized to fill the Aggr present a performance issue ? I would think that as long as the flexvols are not close to full, its ok to have the aggr's at 100%. Thanks, Paul

Weird CIFS problem

I'm domain admin, and I'm accessing a share on my filer \\filer1\tdrive<file://filer1/tdrive>(/vol/vol0/tdrive). It is a seperate qtree, the only perms on the share are everyone/ full control. I even added a domain/administrator full control entry. I can see the top level of sub-dirs, bt I cannot go any deeper. ToE and NFS in VMware

On page 20 of Network Appliance and VMware ESX Server 3.0 Storage Best Practices the authors say "With the release of VMware ESX 3.0.1 Support for TOE enabled NICs has been added", can someone tell me where I can find a list of TOE enabled NICs for 3.5? Everything I have read says that TOE is only supported for iSCSI, not NFS. I am getting ready to move a mid to large sized ESX environment from FC to NFS (probably with x3850's) and I want to make certain I get the right NICs. If I can use TOE cards for NFS then that's a no brainer, but I want to make certain there will be a benefit. If not does anyone have any recommendations? NetApp & Leopard

I've stumbled across a problem we're having accessing filer hosted CIFS shares from Mac OS X Leopard 10.5.1. The Leopard boxes I've tried this on are all bound to our Win2k3 Active Directory. If you log into Leopard with your domain credentials and try to access a share on a filer(this happens on all of our filers and all are at 7.x and above), you will be prompted for your password. If you try to access the same CIFS share hosted on a Win2k3 box, you will get right in. Has anyone else seen this? Thanks, --Carl
