I agree with Herbert's comments that it works exceptionally well in 7.x! Be warned, if you reallocate the source, the SM updates are going to be large and take a long time (potentially, depending on how much data is shifted around). As for measure_layout: it has always been my experience that this is something good to look at, but not the rosetta stone for fragmentation... it is an average of all the blocks on the volume and how fragmented they are. What I've always looked at to determine fragmentation is statit output (from perfstat) as it drills down a bit more to what the disks are actually doing. That by itself is also sometimes misleading, however... I'm sure NetApp support will review both to come up with a more accurate prediction. It appears to jump when the filer kicks off a number of snapmirrors. I've updated the threshold so that the mirroring runs a little more frequent and this appears to have reduced the high cpu issue. Note, I'm only running approximately 4 snap mirror threads on a clustered environment so I'm not hitting any mirroring thread limitations. This increase in cpu is unexpected as the filer is running around 50% less snapmirror threads and 40% less volumes from 6 months ago. so if anything I should see a drop in cpu activity. Support are advising me to run a 'wafl scan reallocate' as one volume is close to 80% full. I'm not convinced and reluctant to kick off wafl commands. For your information, I'm running 6.5.3P4 on a 940C cluster. Has anyone else had similar issues or have ran 'wafl scan reallocate'. Any recommendations for debugging? I've passed on the relevant 'sysstat' data for a 24hr period to Netapp Support. Regards, Philip --

R100 with 256 meg cf card

I've tried to upgrade two r100's from 32 meg CF cards to 256 meg CF cards (so we can have a backup boot image with OnTap 6.5) On both occasions it's pretty much choked as soon as it's tried to see the 256 meg card and we've had to do some messing around to get a single image onto the card I'm beginning to think that an R100 running 6.4.x just can't see a 256meg cf card correctly and was wondering if anyone else has had a problem doing this? Asalam Malekum As you read this, I don't want you to feel sorry for me, because, I believe everyone will die someday. My name is Malik Hafiz , a Muslim Caribbean Merchant in the Caribbean Island I have been diagnosed with esophageal cancer, which was discovered very late, due to my laxity in carrying for my health. It has defiled all forms of medicine, and right now I have only about a few months to live, according to medical experts. I have since lost my power of speech and can only manage to write now; as that has been the only way I am able to communicate.I have not particularly lived my life so well, as I never really cared for anyone not even myself but my business. Though I am very rich, I was never generous, I was always hostile to people and only focus on my business as that is the only thing I cared for. But now I regret all this as I now know that there is more to life than just wanting to have or make all the money in the world. I believe when the Almighty gives me a second chance to come to this world I would live my life a different way from how I have lived it. Now that I know my time is near, I have willed and given most of my properties and assets to my immediate and extended family members and as well as a few close friends. I want theAlmighty to be merciful to me and accept my soul and so, I have decided to give alms to charity Organizations, as I want this to be one of the last good deeds I do on earth. So far, I have distributed money to some charity organizations in the Caribbean Island, London and Ireland. Now that my health has deteriorated so badly, I cannot do this my self any more. I once asked members of my family to close one of my accounts and donate the money, which I have there to charity organization in Bulgaria, they refused and kept the money to themselves. Hence, I do not trust them anymore, as they seem not to be contended with what I have left for them. The last of my money which only few of them knows of is the huge cash deposit that I have with a security firm. Clicking FC9 Disks

Odd question for you guys. I've got a ton of FC9 shelfs on a variety of boxes, including an X86 VA Linux server, several on a Sun Ultra2 (for ZFS testing) and dozens of them on 2 FAS840's. All of them in this one room are doing the same thing, making this odd clicking noise. Its an odd sound, like a crackling noise, which at first I mistook for ice chips bouncing around in the AC ductwork. The sound doesn't seem good, but honestly, even though I've been around FC9 shelves for years, this is the first time I've had so many in such a quiet space. Perhaps this is a normal sound and I just couldn't hear it over screaming colo AC units before? The other thing that I find odd is that the same sound is coming from the FC9 disks on the FAS840's as from the shelves on my Ultra2 and VA Linux box. Clearly its not OnTap resetting disks. In all cases the disks are dead idle 99% of the time. The 840 is a nearline solution which snapmirrors at night, and the Ultra2 and VA box are just for filesystem testing. I'm really embarrassed that I don't know whats going on. Any pointers or similar experiences from anyone else? benr.

The disk size and aggr snap reserve questions always seem to come up (a lot). My rule of thumb (and I think NetApp sales is getting better at positioning the product this way) is that NetApp doesn't sell space... at least not at first. They sell Disaster Recovery... Snapshots, snapmirror, clustering. THAT is what NetApp is about - protecting your data from failure... Next, it's performance. Lastly, actual space for data. Protecting the data is what the aggr snap reserves are for (along with snapmirror) but they do have their limits. While filesystem corruption does occasionally happen (on EVERY platform), NetApp is protecting us from it without our needing to think about it. I personally like that approach. The other part of their approach that I like is the fact that they don't hide what they are doing like some other vendors... The space actually made available in the aggregate to flexible volumes, their snapshots, and aggregate snapshots, old Uncle Tom Cobley and all, is 90% of that, i.e. 696110080 * 0.9 = 626499072 KB. [It would have made a better lesson if 90% of 10 data discs hadn't equalled exactly 9 data discs! Sorry about that, you'll just have to count them carefully ...] Exactly the same (hidden) reserve applies in a traditional volume. [Oh, and to you guys over in the "Aggregate size question" thread, stop quoting all your figures in GB and to 2+ sig figs, as it's imposible to make anything add up if you do that. Actually, the aggregate snap reserve is by default only 5%, not 10%. I have never seen a volume go over 100% usage, in fact the filer yells at you and could take the volume offline if it can't write data. Are you sure you're not talking about consumption of the snap reserve, which CAN go over 100%? Glenn "It's worth remembering that ONTAP already imposes a 10% reserve on the filing system size (including snapshot reserve); or on the sum of sizes, for flexible volumes in an aggregate. A "100% full" tradvol/aggregate is actually only using 90% of the blocks on the discs.
