Netapp and VMware... It's all so confusing!

So, say for example, I want to virtualize an Exchange server. Lets also say that I want to manage it via Snapdrive and SME. Lets also say, just for the heck of it, that I want both the new front-engined Acura NSX as well as the Porsche RC3. The cars aside, I would have to run iSCSI from within the VM, install and use Snapdrive from within the VM to provision LUNs, install Exchange and then use SME? It seems kind of silly to use iSCSI from within a VM if the ESX box were fiber attached to the Filer, just to be able to use Snapdrive and SME, no? I would love to be able to use the features of SD and SME within a completely virtual environment and am wondering what some real world implementations other VMware/Netapp customers are running. Do you run storage for the databases and logs in VMDK's and manage snapshots and backups from a VMware virtual machine perspective or do you manage them as iSCSI LUNs and use SD and SME? autosupport stops functioning

anyone else have this happen? suddenly one of our filers stops generating autosupport messages. both autosupport.enable and autosupport.support.enable are on. if i generate a test email with the autosupport.doit option nothing happens. not even a failed message, the console just sits there as if i never generated one. needless to say neither netapp or our email server gets anything from this filer and nothing hits the console about generating any autosupport emails.

Oracle on Netapp

Looking for someone out there with some experience with pSeries + Oracle. Is SnapVault, SnapMirror, Snapshot used as common replication tools for Oracle in the General Public versus native Oracle Replication or Snapshots? Long ago we also looked at Native clustering / replication tools at the P-Series level. Just curious on how many companies use the SAN replication tools for Oracle. I'd appreciate any insight you might have and I'll try and do some research on this. How many 750G disks can can fit into an aggregate?

We're going to buy some shelves of 750G ATA drives. An aggregate is limited to 16T "raw" (which I presume includes parity disks). Not having any 750G drives yet, we don't know what they size down to. Symantec Antivirus Corporate Edition 10.1 and vscan on filer

Any help on registering the filer to the Symantec antivirus server. I tried to put the filer's hostname /ip address to the symantec antivirus center console but no success. Is this version of antivirus can register the CIFS only filer (ONTAP 7.2.2)? I'm getting error "no network provider accepted the given network path" every time I add the filer's IP address to the symantec antivirus console center...both sides can able to ping each other's hostname and user's permission is already been added as operator on the filer's side.... A-SIS questions

I have read some of the info on how A-SIS works but I have a couple of questions: 1) Assuming an average compression rate (say /home with random docs in it) how much of a performance hit does it impose 2) Does it change how much data is sent over the wire when you use SnapMirror/SnapVault? I.e. if I get 30% compression on a 1 gig snapshot do I send 1 gig or 700 mb to update my target? Hi Peter, I can't disagree with anything you have said, particularly re. failover (see my post that followed). Incidentally though, it was an internal Network Appliance whitepaper that alerted me to the possibility of using CIFS for .vmdk files. See section 9.1.3 on page 58 of TR-3505i. I understand that being an internal paper I shouldn't be mentioning it here, and the published version of that paper on A-SIS eliminates the discussion of VMWare, I suspect because support issues haven't been nailed down yet. Still waiting on feedback from my contact in VMWare, will post when I hear something. There are other reasons beside statefulness of CIFS connections to prefer NFS (performance, etc.), but that's the main issue. I only mentioned it so as not to exclude it as a technical possibility, my followup posts were intended to stop anyone getting too excited about it at this stage. Also even if VMWare were to build it into the kernal, I'd still be pushing clients to pay for an NFS licence instead.
