Netapp and VMware... It's all so confusing!

So, say for example, I want to virtualize an Exchange server. Lets also say that I want to manage it via Snapdrive and SME. Lets also say, just for the heck of it, that I want both the new front-engined Acura NSX as well as the Porsche RC3. The cars aside, I would have to run iSCSI from within the VM, install and use Snapdrive from within the VM to provision LUNs, install Exchange and then use SME? It seems kind of silly to use iSCSI from within a VM if the ESX box were fiber attached to the Filer, just to be able to use Snapdrive and SME, no? I would love to be able to use the features of SD and SME within a completely virtual environment and am wondering what some real world implementations other VMware/Netapp customers are running. Do you run storage for the databases and logs in VMDK's and manage snapshots and backups from a VMware virtual machine perspective or do you manage them as iSCSI LUNs and use SD and SME? Patrick, Tough to mandate dave or admitmac in a diverse higher education environment. 100's of macs show up after the Christmas holidays and they all expect to use university resources immediately. Carl, Our understanding from Apple is that the next Leopard update, 10.52, will address the CIFS access issue. Failed shelf

Hello, We have just been informed by NetApp that we have a failed shelf and a new shelf is on the way. I forgot to ask before I got off the phone if we would be able to use our trial license of SnapMirror to allow us to do this shelf swap over without downtime? This is a FC shelf and we only have enough space to mirror the volumes on to a SATA shelf. Will this work or am I mad? Take care.

SnapDrive makes an API call to expand the NTFS partition and file system within it. (It grows the LUN first.) This can be done with Exchange running. We demo this all the time. Happy holidays!! Jumbo Packets with netapp FAS3050

Hello All, We have been using our netapp primarily for NAS storage, but I am experimenting with iSCSI now for some specific applications. I managed to create a bit of a network issue recently when I tried enabling jumbo packets on my netapp and my test server. The iSCSI connection kept resyncing and was not stable. I think this was because I didn't create a separate vlan for the devices using jumbo packets. Upon further research, I found mention that some devices/ oses calculate the checksums differently and that can affect the max packet size. Does anyone have any recommendations for a packet size for both the netapp and for my linux servers? is 10240 a safe bet(max size supported by my switch) or should I use something like 9000 or 8192? Should I use a different packet size if I am connecting a target to a windows box? I would ideally like to make a jumbo packets vlan and just set all the devices on that vlan to a larger MTU, but I don't want to create a network traffic problem in the process. which netapp LUN corresponds to which Windows disk ?

We have a bunch of netapp LUNs of the same size mapped to a Windows box and it isn't clear how we can tell which one is which. I'm not a Windows person. The Windows admin sent me the Windows info about one of the disks and I can't see anything that would indicate which LUN it is on the netapp. Nothing appears to correspond to the LUN serial number or the igroup mapping number, etc. Is there a way to read the Windows "disk signature" with a netapp command? Or is there a Windows command to print the LUN serial number? Or what about the igroup mapping number? Even within a drive letter, if the two directories are different mounted shares, it will have to copy. for example. you have an export on your filer called /vol/vol1/home which is mounted on a PC host as E:\ You have another export on your filer called /vol/vol1/home/new which is mounted on a PC as E:\dev\ drag & drop, move, CP, robocopy or whatever you have will copy that data over the LAN via the PC, even though it's the same "drive letter". Hi, when i get this right you are moving data within on volume. e.g. /vol/project/data1/data2copy to /vol/project/data2/destination When this is on the same filer a move should proceed within seconds, as you are used to have it on a local hard disk. You can just use "Drag-and-Drop" when connected to the share with sufficient rights. Just give it a try with a testvol. I'm not a Windows expert, but perhaps you can do it in a DOS window with "move" or "rename". Are you moving the data across qtrees? In this case, you are stuck with copy-then-delete. Thanks Michael, we have no NFS here, and even if we had, I would never try it out. First, I cannot imagine how NFS should work where CIFS does not while handling CIFS-data. The scond reason is, what happens to spaces, special characters, ... And third, wo should NFS handle the nested group permissions of CIFS. With Unix-schema owner/group/world the filer would calculate the permissions for the given user - and after the copy all detailed ACL-information would be lost.
