Netapp and VMware... It's all so confusing!

So, say for example, I want to virtualize an Exchange server. Lets also say that I want to manage it via Snapdrive and SME. Lets also say, just for the heck of it, that I want both the new front-engined Acura NSX as well as the Porsche RC3. The cars aside, I would have to run iSCSI from within the VM, install and use Snapdrive from within the VM to provision LUNs, install Exchange and then use SME? It seems kind of silly to use iSCSI from within a VM if the ESX box were fiber attached to the Filer, just to be able to use Snapdrive and SME, no? I would love to be able to use the features of SD and SME within a completely virtual environment and am wondering what some real world implementations other VMware/Netapp customers are running. Do you run storage for the databases and logs in VMDK's and manage snapshots and backups from a VMware virtual machine perspective or do you manage them as iSCSI LUNs and use SD and SME? autosupport stops functioning

anyone else have this happen? suddenly one of our filers stops generating autosupport messages. both autosupport.enable and autosupport.support.enable are on. if i generate a test email with the autosupport.doit option nothing happens. not even a failed message, the console just sits there as if i never generated one. needless to say neither netapp or our email server gets anything from this filer and nothing hits the console about generating any autosupport emails.

FC Lun creation/connection problems from W2K3

Toasters, I am having a heck of a time creating and connecting luns from a Windows 2003 Server. I have installed the latest and greatest Snapdrive and DSM on the system, and I'm running Single_image cfmode on a FAS3020C with ontap 7.2.2. Also, I am using dual Emulex LP10000 HBAs on my hosts. When I attempt to create new luns in Snapdrive, the system creates the luns (i can see the IGroups and luns in filerview) but then it times out trying to reconnect to those luns. After this I can see the Luns in the HBAnywhere Emulex software but not in Snapdrive or DSM. Not only that, but I see each lun 4 times, which means the pathing/masking/igrouping is correct. I can also see all 8 drive paths as drives listed in device manager, but there is nothing in Disk Management. Has anyone seen this or know what direction I should go in? I have a call with Netapp escalated to engineering, but I thought I would also reach out to some real experts here! Clustered heads with SATA disk shelves?

One item that I've researching that is a bit unclear, is that, can I can connect a SATA disk shelf (DS14mk2 AT) to a clustered set of FAS960 heads? I think there is no problem. I assume that you must use the AT-FCx modules, as they are dual-looped. I suspect that the the AT-FCx is mandatory for clustering (as opposed to the AT-FC) , but NOW seems a bit vague, at least according to what I was able to find. Also, I've heard rumors that connecting SATA shelves to a cluster is not really reliable. I was a bit taken a back, as NetApp as the SATA shelves have been out for a while. Is this really the case? Dual-domain CIFS

Hi, In a cluster, since there are two heads, it is possible to make each head member of a different domain for CIFS. Will this cause problems during failover? R200 AT-FC2/FCX

We currently have an R200 with six AT-FC2 shelves. We want to add three AT-FCX shelves. Currently, we only have two loops and the AT-FC2's are spread across both of them. Should I move all of the AT-FC2's onto one loop and put the AT-FCX shelves on the other loop or just add the AT-FCX's to the current loops? Thanks, --Carl

Hi, I was able to build it on RHEL4, running kernel 2.6.9-42.EL.
