cluster mode 8.2.3 / 8.3 dynamic home directory change

Hi Toasters, I just stumbled upon a change in 8.2.3/8.3 with respect to the dynamic home shares and curious to get other folks views on it. Currently we make extensive use of the traditional static 7mode home directory share, cifs.homedir (\\filername\cifs.homedir<file:///\\filername\cifs.homedir>). This is further referenced behind DFS as a single link name with multiple targets. It works great, allows for all users to have a static username defined in AD, allows migration of filers without massive user updates, DR, etc. So life is good, or as good as it can be managing windows home directories. We're now slowly staring to lifecycle 7mode clusters to cmode, which has had a few hiccups, but I expected that . Prior to 8.2.3, you can replicate 7mode home directory functionality perfectly, even making up whatever static name you want. Fast forward to just recently when I was configuring a small cluster at a remote location. 8.2.3, sure slap that on. Configure the dynamic home directories, sure,errr.... no. A seemingly innocent entry in the release notes for 8.2.3 states that static names are no longer acceptable. A previously configured static share is brought forward and continues to function but you can no longer create new ones. Any new dynamic home share has to have the username in it (%w or %u). Needless to say this is a major change to our environment. Automation changes, massive AD updates (close to a nightmare with our IT organization) and a complete invalidation of our DFS namespace structure for home directories. Is anyone else similarly affected by this? I'm struggling to understand what twisted logic guided this coding decision. cDOT security best practise reference?

Hi, I've recently written a Netapp security policy for 7-mode Ontap. I used the TRs for reference: Data ONTAP Security Guidance - TR-3950 (November 2011) PCI-DSS Version 2.0 and Data ONTAP 8.1 TR-3996 (August 2012) Both of these are fairly old and not specific to cDOT. I've seen TR-4191 but that is specific to Windows File services: TR-4191 - Best Practices Guide for Clustered Data ONTAP 8.2.x Windows File Services Does anyone know of any best practise documents for cDOT whether Netapp or otherwise? DS2246 PSU removal unnoticed

Hi All, I've been testing a few monitoring scripts for cDOT and had to pull out some physical components on heads / disk shelves, I noticed the following: when a PSU removed from a DS2246 disk shelf, this fact is not visible for CLI tools like "alert" or "system health". Also Zephyr API calls of 'ses' category don't seem to have visibility on that. So currently there is one disk shelf running on a single PSU and cDOT is quite happy about it. The disk shelf has an amber light on and there was the following event log entry once the PSU was removed: 12/19/2014 11:05:15 na101node-1a WARNING ses.status.psWarning: DS2246 (S/N SHFHU1427000371) shelf 24 on channel 0b power warning for Power supply 1: not installed. This module is on the rear of the shelf at the bottom left. It's running cDOT 8.2.2 Did anyone have similar experience? Is it expected behavior. Cheers, Vladimir

Adding disks to existing aggregates

Hello toasters, A few weeks ago, I had the opportunity to destroy an aggregate in order to consolidate capacity. I started off with two aggregates, each with two RG and both aggr were 600GB drives only the older drives were FC/15K whereas the new aggregate is SAS/10K (I know you can mix RPMs and I'm ok with that). What I'm not ok with is what happened when I attempted to add 8 drives to the new aggregate. The current RG size was 12 and there were 12 drives in the first RG and 11 in the second, I then changed the RG size to 16 and added the drives to the aggregate (expecting to add 4 in each RG). But what really happened is that OnTap added 5 drives to RG1 and created RG2 with the remaining 3 drives. Support couldn't find any documentation on this and (I knew this) that it could only be corrected by destroying the aggregate. Have any of you experienced this? Multiple vCenter VSC installations facing the same storage targets?

Supported configuration? We're carving off a dev VMware environment that will continue to leverage the production NetApps. This new dev cluster will have its own vCenter plus VSC. Can multiple VSCs point to the same storage targets? RM

FAS3270 SP max password length

Hello, I had to change root's password on FAS3270 and noticed that OnTAP 8.1.1 is OK with 23 characters long password (including spaces), but SP cuts it to 17 characters. I couldn't find any relevant document explaining this behavior. Is it expected? Maybe a bug? Checking partition alignment of a powered-on VM

Can mbrscan check a powered-on VM? I know it needs to be off to remediate; at this time I only need to *identify* the misaligned VMs. I can't see guest VM alignment from the VSC GUI because old version. :-/

FAS2240-4 'cluster' with 4 SSDs

Can I sanity check something? I've got a cluster in a box - in the form of a 2240-4. Single shelf, but it's got 4 SSDs installed. Which works as two per head. Looking at it, I can't actually configure a hybrid aggregate, because I have to match RAID types (RAID-DP on two drives doesn't work). That's on my current code rev of 8.1.3 Upgrading to 8.2 might be a solution, because then I could RAID4 my SSDs. But I'm wondering - what happens, given a system with no spares, one of the SSDs dies? (Or indeed, whether running with no spares is actually a good idea in the first place - I do have spares for my SAS drives, but not SSDs). With that in mind - am I onto a bit of a loser here? And I should just be looking to replace my SSDs with some drives to match what I've got already? Or perhaps have one head with flashpool, 3 drives + spare and one without?
