Netapp and VMware... It's all so confusing!

So, say for example, I want to virtualize an Exchange server. Lets also say that I want to manage it via Snapdrive and SME. Lets also say, just for the heck of it, that I want both the new front-engined Acura NSX as well as the Porsche RC3. The cars aside, I would have to run iSCSI from within the VM, install and use Snapdrive from within the VM to provision LUNs, install Exchange and then use SME? It seems kind of silly to use iSCSI from within a VM if the ESX box were fiber attached to the Filer, just to be able to use Snapdrive and SME, no? I would love to be able to use the features of SD and SME within a completely virtual environment and am wondering what some real world implementations other VMware/Netapp customers are running. Do you run storage for the databases and logs in VMDK's and manage snapshots and backups from a VMware virtual machine perspective or do you manage them as iSCSI LUNs and use SD and SME? I am after opinions / Pros and Cons on running a substantial VMware infrastructure of approximate 200+ VMs using the 2 mentioned storage systems. Obvious benefits of the NetApp seem to be around the De-Dupe out of the box. Any other thoughts / experiences would be appreciated Fibre attached Dell R900s will be running the ESX side of things. A version of Data ONTAP different from the one on the FAS31xx system Go to Step 2. Step 3 is to continue with the install, Step 2 is to upgrade the *version*of OnTap to the level of the FAS3170. To me version says software level, not different binaries for the different arch. Besides, step 3 is to continue with the install. Under what case would you have a 3170 build of OnTap on your filers before you start an upgrade? All of this tilted towards making me believe that they were concerned with the software version on the heads. If this is not the case it needs to be made clear. Warning for people doing a head upgrade from a 3050 to a 3170

Here is a warning for people that might be doing a head upgrade from a 3050 to a 3170 (and possibly other heads). The documentation states that you need to bring the 3050 heads up-to the same software level as the 3170 heads. This may very well be the case but they fail to mention that the 3170 uses a different build of OnTap and that you need to upgrade OnTap on the 3170's immediately after the upgrade with the build for the 3170's. So right now we are running 3170's with a build of OnTap 7.2.6.1 built for the 3050's and getting these errors in syslog: na1-u-e0a [na1-u: mgr.stack.openFail:warning]: Unable to open function name/address mapping file /etc/boot/mapfile_7.2.6.1.2O: No such file or directory Netapp Supports response is: "Upgrade or you'll probably get Kernel Panics." and "We'll try to update the documentation." Encryption of data at rest

Hi Everyone, I am looking for suggestions for encryption of data at rest on a NetApp. We use both NFS and CIFS, but no iSCSI. The clients are Linux, Windows, and Mac. Suggestions ? Experiences ? Thanks, Paul

Protection Manager

I have an issue with protection manager 3.7. I have a primary filer (6030 ontap 7.24) that I have backups running to another filer (3070 7.3P5D1). I have manually created the resource volumes on the 3070, and DPM creates the qtree snapmirrror relationship with no issues between filers. The backup happens at 8pm (default policy), and everything is hunky dory. Over time, the GUI has an overall status of normal, then goes to lag warning, then lag error. The snapmirror status is current, and I have removed all the alerts per kb (https://now.netapp.com/Knowledgebase/solutionarea.asp?id=kb42558), but still stays with a status of error. What is strange is if I do a manual backup, it goes from error to normal. All the jobs that run at 8pm are completed, and succeded. This is not in prod yet, but would save the backup guys about 26 hours on the weekend, so they are interested it getting this resolved. I dont want to upgrade the filers to 7.3.1. Hi all, Sorry for the spam, but I thought it might be useful for some folks - Instructor lead online netapp courses are available now. Fundamentals, NCDA Bootcamp, Performance Analysis, etc, pretty much all the standard netapp courses. This is actually a pretty nice way to take a class, typically some of the classes like performance analysis are only taught by a few instructors (myself, two others) outside of netapp, so it's hard to get a physical class for some of the more advanced stuff. Size of installations ?

I was wondering how much storage people are putting behind their storage heads ? I can see that a 3170 nominally goes up to 840TB or 420 per head but do people actually put that much storage on a single unit ? I can see that the V series supports SVC, how common is this configuration ? We need to be aiming for about a half Petabyte per rack, I can see how I could do this with a DDN S2A9900 behind an SVC, I would be interested to hear peoples opinion.

NETAPP (DECRU) Software Issue

Hi guys... Dont know whether this is the right forum to ask...but anyways.... We have E-510 in cluster configuration... Recently strange behavior has started.... Issue-1. I am unable to logon to the cluster through Decru Management Console or through PuTTy...but the same user ID and password is fully functional through WebUI....ON ALL MEMBERS OF THE CLUSTER Issue-2. Recently one of the cluster member (DFE_61) has an even stranger problem...From other cluster members, I can ping the virtual IP on DFE_61 i.e. virtual IP 10.40.200.58...but not the real IP 10.40.200.61.....even from DFE_61 i can ping other devices on the subnet 10.40.200.x and the virtual IPs of other cluster members...but not the real IPs of cluster members. The cluster is up but WebUI shows one of the member's (DFE_61) link down. The Database group state is ABORTED and replication state is RECOVER.The log on DFE_61 shows Software problem PRC2 1:6 watchdog 1182......PRC2 1:7 PRC2 1:8 PRC2 1:9 PRC2 1:10 PRC2 18:9 etc. Tech Support not available till monday... guys please help...
