need help psl clarify

Hi all i am newbiew to filer and storage , i am eager to know following things but unfortunately m not been able to get the rite pointers which can describe the stuffs in detail 1) How exactly the Fiber Channel works ? what are the stuffs involves in setting up a SAN using a Fiber Channeland what are their functions in details along with the alternativedevices that too supports the same functions and can be used 2) what is the purpose of space reservation as far as Netapp's Filer FCP support is concern , why people need space reservation for volumes,qtrees or for luns ? 3) what size of volume i need to have if i want 1 TB of lun ? i have read in docs that i should i have atleast 2-3 times volume size if i wanna have lun on the volume that is for 1 TB of lun i need to have 2-3 TB of volume, where the other storage space being used ? 4) what would be the usable lun storage capacity if i create lun of 1 TB? how much space will get utilized for partition table and keeping file systems metadata ? 5) is it possible to install more then one HBA's on hosts like solaris , windows mechines ? I once had to RMA the motherboard on an old 760. After the swap the onboard SCSI changed from single-ended to differential. Since I was not using the motherboard SCSI it was not an issue for me. I now have two 760s one reports motherboard SCSI as single-ended and the other differential. I suspect there are two different motherboard designs for the 760. Graydon Dodson

You can do it,you must ensure cross network connectivity. If filer A fails,filer B will completely taken over Filer A including Network and Netbios Identity etc.so you have one physikal and one virtual Filer in the same physikal Network Segment. Kerry, 6.4.2P11 is a GA release. Take a look at the the Data Ontap Release Model http://now.netapp.com/NOW/products/ontap_releasemodel/. 6.4.2P6 is a GA release, and was released as GA in September. All subsequent "P" releases will also be released GA. Here's one that I think I know the answer to but I figured I would see if anyone had any comments ... Can a set of clustered filers ... each running CIFS ... belong to two different NT4 domains?? I figure the answer is NO ... since when one of the filers failed the other would not be configured to handle requests for the other domain. Could someone confirm or deny my opinion?? Hi Prashant- I train new sales people at NetApp. My favorite book for an introduction to storage networking is "Using NAS and SAN" by W. Curtis Peterson (published by O'Reilly). This has been required reading for our sales force. A thicker read but also good is "Building Storage Networks" by Marc Farley. I haven't checked the most recent versions for updates but I assume they are updated. syslog, swatch/logsurfer, and you

Hello toasters, I've been thinking of doing some additional monitoring of my filers using swatch or logsurfer. I am currently looking at transcribing what docs I could find on the NOW site to swatch or logsurfer regex, but thought it might be a good idea to see if someone has done this already and would care to share any info with me. I've also looked around the NOW site for actual examples of syslog entries that the filers will generate when something bad has happened, but was unsuccessful in finding anything. Has anyone located or compiled such a list? I googled, searched the toasters archives, etc. No luck. Anyway, let me know if you have anything interesting to share! Thanks, Peter Radavich
