Thank you for your quick response. I appreciate the reply and advice. However, I am under certain restraints in that there is no wish or desire to purchase any new software and the only stated purpose for the tape backups is for disaster recovery purposes. I was hoping to find out what would be the most efficient way to do multiple volume backups so that I could determine the most efficient way in which to label and record the contents of the tapes. Unusual Disk Activity

Hello fellow Toaster Users, Last night I notice that our F760 got a bit sluggish for the very first time. We are running 6.2.1R1D5. Around 1:00 when the scrub started the disk utilization went up to around 9600bB/s and no more than 300NFS ops and practically no network traffic. After the scrub completed it found no errors or problems with any of the disks. Something that dose have me a bit confused is the Cache Age... there is none? This system has been online for 400 days, 11:40 2000225709 NFS ops and I think it might just be time for a reboot. multipathing with a Solaris client

Hi, We connected a FAS940 to a SAN fabric. We have a Solaris client that has 2 HBAs connected to the SAN switch. I would like to setup multipathing to the FAS940. It appears from the documentation and from our NetApp rep that multipathing requires Veritas DMS (dynamic multipathing software). Has anyone setup multipathing on a Solaris client to a NetApp device without Veritas? We've tried mpxio and it doesn't seem to work. Has anyone tried Disk Suite or any other solution? Snapshot reserve management

I think most any Netapp admin has been in this situation: you set aside a chunk of disk space for your snapshot reserve. After a week goes by, you see that the reserve is at 150% of allocation. You manually delete some snapshots until it falls back under 100%, and adjust the snap schedule. A few months go by, new applications are rolled in and old ones retire. Snapshot usage has also increased, but you are at a loss to pinpoint the exact cause of the higher data turnover rate. What do people do to shed more light on this kind of situation? I'd love to be able to conclude "It is the files in /vol/vol0/myapp/data that are chewing up the most snapshot space" or "It is the write activity coming from NFS client myhost1 that is causing the most block turnover". I think I asked this question about five years ago and did not discover an adequate solution back then. RE: Snapshot reserve management

At on stage, I ran into this frequently with large databases & batch processing areas combined with snapmirror across an inadequate WAN pipe. Expert internal advice and intimate knowledge of the database rebuild & batch scheduling matrix still only provided partial knowledge of which block changes were coming from where. Various nfsstat scripting/logging helped identify which servers were committing the most nfs ops, but there was not much we could do about it even with that information. Management involved the snapshot deletion method, some late nights, temporary bandwidth upgrades and ultimately some disk purchases. None of it could be honestly described as prevention. This has changed in my current environment. We currently use 2 tools; DataFabric Manager - our "project" areas a split into hundreds of qtrees that can be monitored individually. Any large usage increases/decreases in a particular area can be pinpointed. Intermine Filecensus - With this we can quantify file/folders that have been created/modified/accessed. Filecensus can even be configured to scan snapshot areas if you want to compare between snapshot and current content. I must note that we do not really have the same snapshot problem in the current environment. But I can see how DFM and Filecensus output could be produced to help track down "paths" that are making the largest contributions to filesystem change. Hope I have added more answers than questions! Netapp F760

Hi all, I've inherited a Netapp F760, with two FC9 shelves (7x36 GB FC disks). I noticed some discussion earlier on this list about Netapp having a "hobbyist" program, whereby home users could get software updates and license keys for unsupported machines. (Mine is working fine, but only has NFS licensed -- I'd like to experiment with CIFS, HTTP, etc.) Does anyone have any more details about this? I searched the Net but was unable to find any specific information, other than that various people seem to have successfully gotten hobbyist license keys from their Netapp reps. (I don't have a Netapp rep, since I am only a home user). Also, my unit has two broken disks -- one was bad when I got it, and another failed (urk) shortly thereafter. I am curious whether I can simply take a new, empty Seagate ST136403FC disk -- this is the same model number as those in the system now, remove the failed disk from the drive carrier, and swap in the new one? That is, is there anything special about a NetApp-spec disk (special firmware maybe, or something prewritten on the disk, or whatever) that differentiates it from a generic Seagate disk, and would therefore prevent me from using it in the system? If so, is there any workaround? F760 SCSI, Single-ended or Differential

Greetings, I just noticed that my F760 displays, what I believe to be, its on-board external SCSI port as "Fast/Wide, Single-ended" F760> sysconfig -v NetApp Release 6.4R1: Thu Mar 13 22:59:45 PST 2003 .... slot 0: SCSI Host Adapter 0b (Qlogic ISP 1040B, <ONLINE>) Fast/Wide, Single-ended Firmware Version 4.66.00 Clock Rate 60MHz. 4: Tape: Quantum DLT7000 245F 5: Tape: Quantum DLT7000 245F ..... I am/was under the impression that it was a Fast/Wide Differential (on-board) SCSI controller. I have 2 DLT7000 drives connected to the Filer ... and they are absolutely differential (2 drives from a Sun L1000). My Veritas Datacenter software keeps down'ing one of my drives and I have just ignored it due to time constraints plus the fact that I had/have one good drive still working. But now that I am trying to troubleshoot the problem, I do not know if the problem is that I have been lucky that a "Single-ended" filer controller has been providing me good backups to my differential (one) tape drive? (Is that even supposed to work at all?) Can anyone confirm that the output (sysconfig -v) of a F760 "Single-ended" is correct or incorrect? That is, is the on-board external SCSI port a differential or single-ended SCSI port and the "sysconfig -v" message is right or wrong? Regards, Harold White Covaro Networks
