I've got some questions that I'm hoping people on this list may be able to help answer. Background first. We're working on an application that uses alot of Berkeley DB hash files, via DB_File in perl. Right now, we are looking at about 30k individual databases. Overall, the application currently hit's about 1000 of these databases a minute with a few hundred reads per use and potentially an equal number of writes. Occasionally the application does grooming on the databases, rebuilding them to reclaim space and expire unused entries. Each database will be around 5 megs. We're testing on a pair of clustered 760s with half of the anticipated load. Each filer has 2 shelves of 18s. The load generated by the application is enough to max the disks on both filers. CPU utilization is around 40% and ops are generally under 1000. Disk read's average about 12mb/s, net out, around 5mb/s per filer. Now, here's the question. Under berkeley db you can control the hash bucket size which will default to the filesystem block unless other wise specified. Does anyone know what the optimum bucket size would be on a NetApp? Greetings! As you read this, I don't want you to feel sorry for me, because, I believe everyone will die someday. My name is Kumpe Arno 72yrsold a gold merchant in Spain.I have been diagnosed with cancer . It has defiled all forms of medical treatment, and right now I have only about a few months to live, according to medical experts. I have not particularly lived my life so well, as I never really cared for anyone(not even myself)but my business. Though I am very rich, I was never generous, I was always hostile to people and only focused on my business as that was the only thing I cared for. But now I regret all this as I now know that there is more to life than just wanting to have or make all the money in the world. I believe when God gives me a second chance to come to this world I would live my life a different way from how I have lived it. Now that God has called me, I have willed and given most of my property and assets to my immediate and extended family members as well as a few close friends. I want God to be merciful to me and accept my soul so, I have decided to give alms to charity organizations, as I want this to be one of the last good deeds I do on earth. So far, I have distributed money to some charity organizations in Spain, Algeria and Malaysia. Now that my health has deteriorated so badly, I cannot do this myself anymore. I once asked members of my family to close one of my accounts and distribute the money which I have there to charity organization in Bulgaria and Pakistan, they refused and kept the money to themselves. Hence, I do not trust them anymore, as they seem not to be contended with what I have left for them. Now, I am writing you from my laptop computer in my hospital bed where I await my time to come. I pray and hope that you understand my intentions and purpose and do not read my message for wrong reasons. I will want you to help me collect this deposit and dispatched it to charity organizations. known problems with linux 2.4.21 kernels?

Hi all, we've found some odd failure messages at all linux machines running 2.4.21 here. Those machines report "NFS: server filerX-vif1 not responding, timed out" over the whole day again and again. All machines are either some DELL 2650 or HP Proliant DL360/DL380. All machines have a "Broadcom Corporation NetXtreme" Gigbit NIC. It seems that the same type of machines with linux kernel 2.4.18 have no NFS problems. Has anyone seen the same problems and if so - is it a kernel problem? Hey, I was in your position not too long ago. a) we don't have the money to buy another netapp b) Engineering has been hounding IT for more space c) needed a cheap solution We ended buying this : http://www.promise.com/product/product_detail_eng.asp?productId=109&familyI… There is also the new one VTrak 15100. The UltraTrak RM15000 we purchased ran about $7K with all 15 drives included. (160gb each) It's not a bad device as we have it plugged into a Dell Poweredge 2450 running windows 2000. Though I would rather have it plugged into a Linux machine...that might be further down the road. You might wanna look into windows 2003 server with shadow copy though I don't know much about it at all. Maybe someone who has played with that feature will shed some light on this. Of course it would be better to have another NetApp but I couldn't get this into our IT budget. Dear Toasters, I would like to poll all the poor people on the list who cant afford/justify the need for clusters and instead use other cheap solution to provide redundancy of their data. Even a simple IDE-RAID solution, with some kind of heartbeat system... I have a couple of netapp's here on-site and in the event of a disaster, where the RAID array's are lost and i need to rebuild from scratch, i would like to have someother system serving the data i need, albeit at much lower performance.
