Filers do a Disk-Scrub each sunday. Davinder, You don't defragment filers. WAFL as a file system is designed to minimize fragmentation from the get-go. That's where NVRAM comes in, and the 10% of the file system that's reserved for WAFL to use to optimize things. And because of the way WAFL works, when you do have fragmentation, you don't see much of an impact on performance. If you're really determined to defragment your filer, back it up, erase it, and restore. Question about disk replacing

Hello, I have vol0 on netapp F760 (5.3.5) with mixed 18G and 36G disks. I noticed, that there're two disks 36G in the disk group with 18G disks. As I understand, I lose 2x(36-18)=36G of the disk space. Now I added two new 18GB disks to the netapp. My question is how I can replace the 36G disks with the new ones. If this is a known problem, and the patch to resolve it exists, and it has been thoroughly tested (I assume this is done before customer support would provide the patch to a customer), then why isn't it posted in the s/w downloads or in the "Solution or Fix" (redundant?) item in the Bug Details table for Bug 31340? Why hasn't a Field Alert been posted? I would like to preemptively advise my customers who use NDMP compliant s/w to install this patch -- do they have to initiate a case with customer support to get it? Unable to delete a snapshot

Hello, I have what could be a major problem soon. I have a snapshot that was created by an ndmpd session, that cannot be deleted. It looks like the backup must have failed, but the netapp thinks it is still running. There's an open bug for that: 26017. Its public notes are: TITLE: Unable to delete busy snapshot DESCRIPTION: There are cases when the creation of a snapshot may be aborted, that will leave the resulting snapshot in a "busy" state. This has been known to occur when third party backup software and/or hardware does not gracefully handle tape spanning or mid-backup aborts. WORKAROUND: Reboot the filer to clear the snapshot "busy" state, and then delete the snapshot. Hi Ulrich, There are a couple of known problems that could explain this: Bug 16686: "CIFS client unable to access files with non-8.3 names" Fixed in 5.3.4 and Bug 21304: "NT 4.0 SP5 redirectors reports too short SMBs" Fixed in 5.3.7 Bug 16686 is more serious since it can interfere with a client's ability to open a file. We think bug 21304 is harmless (aside from the irritation of many bogus event log entries) because it is only generated when the client queries for certain pathnames that do not exist, a fact that the client eventually learns anyway. Further information about these bugs can be found on NOW. Submit a full report with Netapp customer support - they can find out for sure what's going on and help you upgrade if necessary. we are using two clustered f760 to host the user-homedirs (1500 user) and other files. so the filers are heavy loaded. unfortunately most of the nt4-clients get a eventid 3006 from source Rdr wich means, that the redirector-service got a too short ServerMessageBlock. any idea? Ulrich Neumann
