Is the mounts on the AIX, HP-UX and Linux done also via TCP ? It might lead you to the fact that the mount over TCP just takes some more time to finish. Just a suggestion, Eyal. Why TCP by the way ? Lotus Notes and Filers

We have an NT network that serves about 350 users. We recently purchased an F720 to place our data on. We have successfully migrated our user homes, some SQL databases, and some misc other stuff, but we are having serious problems getting the Filer and Lotus Notes to work together. I have followed the Netapp whitepaper on migrating Lotus Notes databases to the filer utilizing option 1 (binaries and id's on the server, data on the filer). Ever since we have migrated our data to the filer, we have consistent database corruptions on both our e-mail server and our application server (both running Notes 4.6.5a). On our e-mail server, user mailboxes will get corrupted sometimes and the "mail.box" will get corrupted other times. On our application server, we have one database in particular that seems to be the main culprit of corruptions and it is a 2.5 Gb mail-in database that we use for contact management. About the only thing that Netapp support has been able to tell us so far is to disable oplocks. I have tried this at both the share level and at the filer level, neither of which helped. Currently we have re-enabled it filer wide and disabled it only at the share points where the Notes servers access the filer. Our filer is running 5.3.7 R2. Our notes servers are accessing the filer through a mapped drive connected to the '\\ipaddress\share$' on the filer (yes I did use a hidden share here), and Notes is not running as a service. We had to put a stop to this because the service would not run interactively with the console and we could not connect to it using the remote administrator. I'm sure I have missed some details that I would be more than happy to fill in if it would help. Needless to say, we are not very happy with our Notes/Filer integration. As long as your NFS lock manager is running on the database server, you will have no problems at all. The only thing I suggest is order 2 more local disks to keep your redo logs on. Issues are similiar with ee versus standard...get the white paper at http://www.netapp.com/tech_library which gives details for setting this up. We are not familiar with running a database manager while maintaining the database on an NFS server, but gather that quite a number of people that subscribe to toasters are using Oracle with NetApp servers. While looking at the purchase of a new system last year, I asked about trade-ins on old equipment. NetApps can do this it seems. My question would be - "What happens to all that old hardware?" Judging by the trade in values I would rather follow this course of action then sell it on privatley. On the point of selling on hardware such as disks, surely you are getting into a legal minefield here Scott. What happens to equipment used to store data suject to non-disclosure agreements? How do you guarentee complete data scrubbing? I think I would feel a little uncomfotable with my system (a development machine) finding its way out onto the open market. Likewise I would be a bit cautious about purchasing equipment that may have been used in a similar role.. These filers are 760's, by the way. Then I discovered a serious "sweet spot" at a very low number. "max" is the number of simultaneous copies between mount point pairs. "k/sec" are my visual estimates of _each_ cp rate, from watching iostat for about a minute; rates jump around by +- 100 k/sec. Problem reading files from Solaris 8

After resofting one of my Solaris boxen to Solaris 8, I am unable to read some of the files in volumes mounted from a F720 running 5.3.6R2 I get error messages like this doing an ls. # ls ls: c5200-is-l.120-8.0.2.T: Value too large for defined data type ls: c7200-is-mz.121-4.bin: Value too large for defined data type ls: c7200-p-mz.121-4.bin: Value too large for defined data type The files are not really large, somewhere in the 8-10MByte range and is easily accessed from Solaris 2.6, just not from Solaris 8 systems. I have seen this before. It has something to do with the mmap routine called by the cp program in Solaris 2.6. I believe that it is fixed in Solaris 2.8 build 33. Using a dd everyting goes OK. Maybe it is also possible to "tar" the directory.
