You need to enable "user shares" in the Tools->options->network tab. It's also often a good idea to create a special backup share on a snapshot. Karl, Mark explained how this works better than I ever could. I'd just like to point out that the SecureShare tool allows you to view and change the underlying UNIX-style file permissions. It doesn't add any functionality to the filer. The information is passed to the backup program using a technique involving OS/2-style extended attributes. When these are restored, the filer does the "right thing" to restore the correct permissions. This technique also correctly backs up and restores all UNIX filesystem objects, including block/char special device files, symbolic links, hard links, etc. This (patent-pending) feature has been available since ONTAP version 5.1. I'm not sure where, but this should be documented in the system guide somewhere. Paul, others, I still don't get it! How can a CIFS-client (without SecureShare) see the UNIX-permissions on files on a filer? And especially, how do files restored by a CIFS-client get UNIX-style permissions? I've tested it, and I can see that it actually works, but I'm not confident that I can recommend this to my customers... Is this dependent on the OS version on the filer or the client backing it up? NetApps for Web-based File Storage Services

We're currently looking at using our existing NetApp boxes for deploying web based storage services for the campus. One approach we've considered is developing our own software which would interface to the ONTAP cifs admin commands. The idea would be to develop something that lets user create their own shares and groups, with the ability to add/remove users. This could be possibly inflexible tho, and would probably lead to a proliferation of groups. Another approach could be to use NFS and export the storage to a web server, and put our home-grown software on the webserver. Has anyone done anything like this? Or does anyone know of a possible vendor solutions that could use our existing infrastructure?

RMA follow-up

Does someone know how to get them to call off the dogs. I get strangers calling me asking me where the RMA return is, before it gets delivered to my office. It takes me about a week to schedule the downtime and another week to get the old part out of shipping. These people call me and threaten to charge me for a part after 10 days. I've got work to do that does not include finding out what number and shipper that department used to return the part and I am really getting bugged by the continuing and threatening calls from strangers. If they just wait, they will turn up on the loading dock at NetApp. I've called NetApp sales, RMA team at NetApp, NetApp support, and now I'll try you. Automount fails on first attempt on Solaris

Hi! I have a problem with automount on Solaris. The problem appears on both Solaris 2.6 and Solaris 8. On the first attempt to access any directory located on the filer the automount request times out but on the second attempt it mounts the directory. It takes 15 seconds to mount the directory. All other mounts after the first one has been mounted works fine. This behaviour appears everytime I try to access a directory after the automounter has released all mounts. Automount works just fine on AIX, HP-UX, Linux when accessing the same directories. We use NFS version 3 and NFS over TCP is enabled on the filer. We have OnTap 5.3.6R2 installed on the filer.
