The supported Fibre Channel HBAs for the F840 are as follows: Fibre Channel Host Bus Adapters: Qlogic X2043A (optical) Qlogic X2045A (2 channel optical) Qlogic X2041A (copper) One F-QIP card in the Spectra 12000 can control 4 drives. In this case, you will need only one X2043A (assuming you want optical) HBA connected to that F-QIP. If you have more than 4 drives in the library then your options are the X2045A or X2043A. You have tremendous flexibility with those platforms. You can go with a single X2043A per filer and daisy chain the busses on the QIP at the Gator, or you can use the X2045A to connect to both FC ports for HA. You can direct connect or go through a fibre switch. In fact, NetApp just announced their OSN FC fabric tape b/u solutions: Press release: http://www.netapp.com/news/press/2001/news_rel_20010508b.html Spectra Logic solution/requirements: http://www.netapp.com/osn/info/gbe/spectralogic.html According to the documentation in the second link, you can only connect a single FC port from the F-QIP in the certified solution. However, you don't have to go with the OSN FC fabric solution. There are other certified solutions, such as the old Gold solution with the Vixel 8100 or direct connect (as I mentioned above). Some considerations: - with current AIT-2 specs you can fully occupy 4 drives (62.4MB/sec compressed total) with a single FC connection at 100MB/sec. However, if you should upgrade to AIT-3 (due out this summer/fall; 124.8MB/sec compressed total), then you will need to connect to both FC ports on the F-QIP to keep the drives busy - AIT advantages vs. DLT: 1. investment protection/backwards compatibility/future development path through AIT-6 (biggest differentiator in my estimation) 2. price/performance 3. density 4. MIC 5. slower media speed ==> less wear & tear; faster/more accurate seeks; better MTBF I'm a sales guy (and therefore obviously biased), but I can sell either one and make the same money off both. When I've done this (during a downtime), I download the o/s onto both boxes and reboot them at the same time. Here is a perl script my coworker wrote that pretty closely mimics the du command. The solutions I saw here yesterday aren't close enough for my taste. Du should print a summary at the end of output. disable NT remote management?

Folks, My Unix, or rather, command-line, bias is showing here, so please bear with me. We're running a mixed-security-style filer, OnTAP-5.3.6R2, also testing 6.1R1. Historically, we've done all management of the filer from a Unix admin host, but we do like for our NT admins to be able to set and/or override permissions for our NT users, so we've done the obligatory two-way mapping in usermap.cfg between the Unix "root" account and the NT domain admin account. In doing so, we've opened what we consider to be a hole in our desired Unix-only management of the filer: It's now possible for our NT admins to create/delete/change shares using Server Manager. We'd really prefer to keep this functionality restricted to a command-line type of interface, so we can keep it under control via scripting, version control, and other types of automation that so far aren't possible using the Windows Server Manager GUI. So, does anyone know how to disable access to Server Manager, and in particular to the ability to create/change shares, but still preserve the ability to manipulate permissions on behalf of our users (via shares previously setup)? I've seen reference to the magic "IPC$" share, and assume that if I could delete that it would prevent remote management from the Windows systems, but I've yet to find a way to accomplish this. du without the .snapshot

Hi all, I have a few directories that are automounted from NetApp F720 Filer to the SUN boxes. The mounted directories are directories under qtrees. .snapshot is accessible under all mountpoints. The issue I have is when doing du to query the directory usage, there will be error messages due to permission level of contents beneath the .snapshot. I would like to get the correct disk usage of my mounted directories. One way to do it is to disable access to the snapshot directories by "vol options volumename nosnapdir on". Is there anyway of getting the correct output of du without accessing the .snapshot directories and not having to turn off and on the options each time, perhaps the right options of du to bypass that particular directories? Or you can try this quick perl script I just hacked out about 5 mins. ago. Feel free to modify to your heart's content. It's called mydu and it takes as an argument the top level directory you want to scan. It just skips ., .., and .snapshot.
