SQL Performance

Hi everybody! Are there any folks out there using SQL 7 on a Filer? I'm looking to see what you found as far as performance goes. We just moved 2 production databases to our F840 last night. We noticed that the copies to and from the database are incredibly fast. However, most queries other than the most basic have slowed down. In some cases it's as much as 400%. The Filer has 2 OC-3 ATM links and the database server has 1. We have a few databases that will be adversely affected by that kind of performance decrease. Are there any tips or tricks out there that might help other than going GigE? Any other observations? Thank you!! disk scrub time

hi all, normally the disk scrub starts on sunday 1 a.m. cause of the running ndmp-backup, the filer counldn't finish the scrub within the default deadline time of 6 h. there are 4 volumes on the filer and just 1 finished the scrub. the other get stopped like following: Sun Jul 8 01:00:00 CES [fsup02: raid_scrub_admin:notice]: Beginning disk scrubbing... Sun Jul 8 07:00:01 CES [fsup02: consumer:notice]: Disk scrub stopped because the scrub time limit was exceeded. Sun Jul 8 07:00:01 CES [fsup02: consumer:notice]: Scrub for volume vol0, RAID group 0 stopped at stripe 13435506. Sun Jul 8 07:00:01 CES [fsup02: consumer:notice]: 0 new parity inconsistencies found, 0 to date. We recently moved about 400GB of data from a NT4 file server to a Win2k file server using a tool from Fastlane. The tool also had a NetApp proxy, where you would install the software on a third system, independent of the first server and the filer. Not sure if it would work for two filers, but it might be worth a try. It would beat the backup and restore route, and then trying to hack the permissions with the cacls or subinacls tools. Ugh. We had a ton of local groups, and a few local accounts, that were all migrated pretty painlessly. Drop an email back if you want more details on the product. The only non-slam-dunk about it is NTFS local groups. Background: We use the Microsoft recommended method of assigning rights to filesystems, that is UGLR (phonetic == Uglier). Users belong to ... Global groups, which belong to ... Local groups, which are assigned access to ... Resources. The problem is that Local groups have a non-global SIDs between machines. That is, each filer assigns its own local SID's to local groups in its /etc/lclgroups.cfg on the root volume. That SID gets moved with the ACL data to the destination, but the destination machine can't resolve its membership with its local groups. The traditional approach to fixing this is using a tool from Aelita or subinacl to traverse the entire destination filesystem (post-migration) and replacing any occurrence of the old SID with that of a new SID for a local group on the destination filer. This is all fine and good, but could take forever. -------- THE IDEA -------- Here's my idea on a better way to do this. Simply shutdown CIFS on the destination machine pre-move and create analogous local group entries with SIDs that match the source. NetApp tech support might not like the idea too much, but it would mean that the same global groups would belong to that SID and thus no filesystem traversing or ACL modification! Ta Da! Unfortunately, we are copying data from more source machines than there are destination machines and we are not copying data per filer - that is some data from filer1 will go to filerA, some to filerB, etc. This means that for my scheme to work, we'd need globally unique local group SID's. Since it appears that ONTAP starts assigning local group SID's at 65536 sequentially, we have lots of conflicting local groups with those lower numbered SID's. To still use the original concept, I had the idea of copying the membership of all the groups on the source filers into new local groups with globally unique SID's. Then run one of the ACL tools to create analogous ACE's for the new group wherever it finds the old one. (This is all done pre-migration) After the migration we simply create local groups on the destination machine with SID's of the new, analogous rights granted group. Has anyone tried something like this before?? Can anyone see any problems with this approach?? How about an alternative approach?? Again, the idea is to prevent the requirement of a filesystem traversal during migration. There is a hidden option, cifs.shutdown_msg_level. Filer Serial Connectivity

Good morning all, We have 4 clustered F840Cs in our environment. As a backup connection method, we're looking at some type of terminal server that we can connect the filers to that will present the filers serial ports as IP addresses that we can connect to , in order to view the bootup messages etc, with a modem hookup in case of complete network failure. Does anyone else out there have any recommendations on make/model of equipment? Thanks as always, in advance. I'm not sure where's the best place to direct this feedback, but the NetApp Tech Library papers on Exchange on filers and SnapManager you listed below ought to be updated for SnapManager 1.1. In particular, there is no reference to NetApp Drive, and restores are described as 50GB/hr copies from Snapshots rather than SnapRestore-style reversions to the Snapshots. Do you know you are placing your Exchange server in an unsupported mode as far as Microsoft is concerned??? >>Our question is related to connectivity. The place where I work has purchased another filer (we already have one being used for network file services) so that we can move our Exchange databases to it (against my recommendations). The salesman told us that GigE on a private network between the filer and the server is the only way to go. It needs the GigE for quick responses to the Exchange server. I do not have any personal experiences yet. How many people are you planning on supporting and how active are they on e-mail?? Good lUck. - Scott W.
