Netapp + Amanda.: Problems

We have been having problems backing up our Netapp filer using Amanda. We are using the modified dump program for Netapp but still everytime the amanda script runs it finds the mounted disk offline. The following are the entries in our Tape Backup server running Amanda server( it hosts the tape device too )...../etc/fstab file: /dev/sda5 on / type ext2 (rw) none on /proc type proc (rw) /dev/sda1 on /boot type ext2 (rw) /dev/sdb1 on /SPOOL1 type ext2 (rw) /dev/sdc1 on /SPOOL2 type ext2 (rw) none on /dev/pts type devpts (rw,gid=5,mode=620) automount(pid468) on /misc type autofs (rw,fd=5,pgrp=468,minproto=2,maxproto=3) xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx:/vol/vol1/home/oracle/oradata on /netapp/oradata/backup type nfs (ro ,addr=xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx) xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx:/etc on /netapp/etc type nfs (ro,addr=xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx) (xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx is the IP address of our Filer Interface) Also, the entries in the disklist file corresponding to the Netapp Filer is: # BEGIN NETAPP SECTION # Netapp filesystems via modified dump program. xxx.navin.com /netapp/oradata/backup nocomp-user -1 local # END NETAPP SECTION where xxx.navin.com is the FQDN of our Tape Backup Server. Check out the NOW site for times, places, and costs..it's worth it! Now to the answer: To view NVRAM stats, you use the wafl_susp command. To find this command, you'll need to be in rc_toggle_basic or priv set advanced mode. To zero out the stats, use: filer*> wafl_susp -z Then run your test. Then to view the stats, run: filer*> wafl_susp -w You'll get screens full of info but the really important ones are the following 3: cp_from_timer cp_from_log_full cp_from_cp The first 2 are good, the 3rd one is bad. cp_from_timer is the number of times your NVRAM was flushed because half of the NVRAM was not filled in 10 seconds. cp_from_log_full is when you filled up half of your NVRAM and flushed it before the 2nd half of your NVRAM filled. Again, not a big deal. The 3rd one, cp_from_cp means that you filled the 2nd side of your NVRAM BEFORE you finished flushing the first half. This is bad. It's okay to have a few of them, but if they get to be a signifcant percentage of your cps, you're either over-running your NVRAM, or there's a problem with your disk subsystem and it's not writing out the data very quickly (like maybe your volume is 99% full). Now individual disk utilizations are found with statit. This is similar to wafl_susp in that you start it, then you stop it and print out the results. The 2 command for statit are filer*> statit -b to start collecting filer*> statit -e to end it and dump the data. You'll find how busy your individual disks are that way, plus a BUNCH of other things, but that's probably the most important. But before I'd even go down these paths, I'd be watching my sysstat's very carefully. sysstat 1 is your friend in looking at performance. It can give you some really good clues. Also check netstat, ifstat, and the other networking commands for errors. Check your switch ports for dropped packets. Things like flow control settings (a good thing, I suggest full flowcontrol on send and receive) can also mess up Gbit interfaces. Anyway, this is probably all I can practically jam into a single message and have it make sense. Of course, the Global Support Centers at NTAP are always here and can help your diagnose these types of problems as well. I would doubt there were any big fixes to spares_zero. I haven't checked them, but since it's not in regular command mode, I wouldn't hold my breath. One way to keep your console while the process is running is to issue the command via rsh from a trusted host. That way you don't chew up your prompt. Something like: # rsh filer 'priv set diag ; spares_zero' Note, use the single quotes so that both commands go to the filer. spares_zero still exists, but you need to set your privledge move to diag rather than advanced. This is supposed to all be fixed in an upcoming release and there will be an officially blessed way to do this. Stay tuned. Hi Srs. I´m looking for benchmark infomation about FILER 760, mainly about NVRAM and disk´s operations (reading and writing). We´ve got the Filer and Servers on a Gigaethernet network but when we see on switch statistics the thoughtput is slowly than a fastethernet. Flavio Cardoso

I'm looking for any benchmarking info. related using a NetApp instead of server-dedicated disk in a web server cluster; i.e., how many web servers can I run before a single NetApp device becomes slower than using dedicated disk per server? The more specific the benchmarks, the better (relating to types/versions of servers, OS, etc.). ---- Steve Sapovits

This comes up quite a bit. It all depends on who how sophisticated you think the person is who may be trying to retrieve the data is. For 99.99% of the world, just zero'ing the disks (even multiple times if it makes you feel comfortable) is enough. I suppose you could create some dummy data to put on the disks after you zero out the disks, then zero them out again. But that's a lot of time and effort to get you from 99.99% to 99.999%. If you are concerned about professional, government-backed efforts to recover the data, then your only real option is to destroy the disks entirely. Bust them into thousands of pieces and dispose of those pieces in different trash containers. While this is certainly expensive since you can't return or re-use the disks, it is by far the most secure. However, there are very few people who need this level of security, but it's an option if your data abosulutely cannot ever be recovered. Jan, Legato backup software needs to save client (NetApp) "index" information back to Backup server host. Create same pool name on Backup host's attached tape drive. If you don't have tape drive attached to backup server. You can create file device and label it same as NetApp pool. Make sure you have patch 001 for 6.0.1 Legato Networker. Problem renaming files

We have our CVS repository on a F840 running 6.1R1. I've been chasing (what I thought was) a CVS Commit problem re renaming files but now I think this may be a filer issue because I've been able to reproduce the problem outside of CVS. We're using FreeBSD. Basically I have group write permission to a directory where I want to rename a file. All attempts fail with a "Permission denied" error. Then I restored the directory from a tgz file and after that, everything started working fine! The owners, permissions, and modified dates were the same as before so I don't understand why restoring this directory would change anything. Previously we had our CVS repository on a F520 running 5.3.6 and we never had any problems. Please, can anyone explain this?
