With SnapMirror (and vol copy for that matter), you must have at least the same amount of TOTAL space on the destination as you have on the source. This is because SnapMirror is a block for block copy. To move data to a smaller volume, you'll need to do something like ndmpcopy. This works well for the scenario you describe. Hello all: I think I know that answer to this one but I figured I would put it out here just to make sure I'm right. I wanted to use snapmirror to migrate a volume to a different filer. This volume is 225Gigs but it only has 68Gigs of data on it. If I'm to use snapmirror to do this then I need to migrate it to a 225Gig volume correct? I wanted to shrink the volume while I was at it so I'm thinking I'm going to have to do it another way. Has anybody had experience with this? Is it safe to assume that you mean when backing up over CIFS or NFS versus the Legato client pack for NetApp? I haven't had my hands on a machine running Legato NetWorker for some time so I'm getting rusty. Anyway, as I recall, you can configure a pre- and post-job script within each client's "properties" dialog. You could use the script to issue rsh commands to the filer to do what you want. Another way to approach this might be to run a script on the NetWorker server. In the script you could issue rsh commands to the filer to take the snapshot then you could issue a manual backup via command line. Jan, if you have a version of Legato which is NDMP compliant, ( 6.0.1 and up), and define the filer as an NDMP client, then Legato itself, creates a snapshot, backs it up and deletes it. Michael, I too am running enterprise NT on the same subnet and have a 200MB channel dedicated to the scanner. I have seen pretty good performance but as I said have some issues that Symantec and Netapp are addressing. I believe you may have hit on some of them so I will do my best to help... First I found out few months ago, and will post to toasters about the following hidden option vscan options mandatory_scan off Once you set this option, even if the scanner becomes unavailable or unreachable for some reason the Filer will serve files. I ran into this and it is a compounded issue, for one it doesn't give the file but it also provides an erroneous error saying a network error has occurred which could spawn 100's of unnessary, misdirected help desk calls. As for the 3-4 weeks stop scanning issue, not sure if this is the same as the one I have had but the Filer I run CSS against is for developers. It currently has over 600GB in more then 1.5 million files. As I said I get very good performance but some of these files are huge and the CSS box times out on them. So it seems after a certain amount of time outs and/or when the queue gets filled and this happens the Filer disconnects itself from the CSS box. The CSS box will always continue to try and reconnect because of the following configuration in the symscan.cfg file RPCMaxReconnectAttempts=0 Unfortunately the Filer will not try to reconnect so in order to get this back to a functional state you need to stop and start the services on the NT box running CSS. I have asked Symantec to work with Netapp on this and they are but so far I am told it may have something to do with the limitations of RPC and Netapps implementation. I suggested maybe this could be changed from RPC to NPMP but not sure if that is possible. They said they would look into it. Other suggestions I have, is for you to make a few other changes to your symscan.cfg file. First with your connectivity I would change your ScanThreads entry from the default. With a 200MB dedicated pipe mine is now =50. Another is is if you don't have CSS configured to send you mail you should, mine are as follows SMTPPrimary= Your SMTP Mail Host SMTPSecondary= SMTPCrashAlertEnable=1 SMTPStartUpAlertEnable=1 SMTPShutDownAlertEnable=1 SMTPDefUpdateAlertEnable=1 SMTPLoadExceededAlertEnable=1 SMTPDefErrorAlertEnable=0 SMTPRecipList= E-mail Addresses SMTPDomain= With these settings you will be notified when there is an overflow, a crash, and when the services stop and start. The overflow is the most useful because when I see a large increment of these e-mails I keep an eye out for that disconnection which causes me to have to stop and restart the 2 CSS services. I am trying to automate some of this stuff but just haven't had time yet. Hopefully this made sense and helps. The file is renamed .nfsXXXX (where XXXX is a unique suffix) to ensure that the original process using the file is allowed to complete. When the file is closed, remove is issued on the .nfsXXXX file. Here is an quick example (under an NFS mountpoint): $ sleep 30 > testfile & [1] 2025 $ rm testfile $ ls -al -rw------- 1 skipper staff 0 Dec 14 08:40 .nfs1D45 Solaris actually ships with a script that is called by cron (/usr/lib/fs/nfs/nfsfind) to remove these files that the client missed. Michael, I have tried to do something very similar to this although I have not used the SecureShare Quota Manager and do not anything about it. I do however know that although OnTap 6.1 supports SID based quotas it only suports this for users. It does not support SID Group quotas. Does the SecureShare Quota Manager get by this? If so it is something I proably need to look at, If not then I do not believe what you are trying to accomplish can be done.
