We too have experienced similar performance issues on the same OS version. However, our users are using Trend OfficeScan for virus scanning, not NAV. We have an open case with NetApp, but so far they have provided us with no information. If this is a widespread problem with this OS version, I would like to know when a patch is expected, if anyone knows. Thank you. David, Exactly what kind of issues are you seeing. I have the exact same setup except I have Gigabit instead of 100Mb. The issue primarily seems to be opening Office files from a share can take 30+ seconds. Other files types don't seem to be such an issue although I've personally seen a tiny text file take 20 seconds to open in Notepad. I've been the lone voice in the wilderness claiming it's not a Filer problem although it sounds like that might not be entirely true. We did see that running NAV with network drive checking enabled significantly made file access slower. We've done extensive testing and trouble shooting with the local NetApp folks. They discovered the NAV problem. The biggest reason I've not been looking at the Filer as a source of the problem is we've experienced the exact same behavior when accessing files from a share on an NT server. That in conjunction with some packet captures we've done seem to point to a problem with NT's TCP/IP stack. The stack starts out using very small packets and takes forever to ramp up to a decent packet size (Win2K is much faster - in tests a Win2K box on 100Mb ran laps around an NT server using Gigabit). We also use NIS as our primary means of authentication on the Filer and we still haven't ruled this out as an issue. I'm certainly interested in learning more about your problem and everything you learn/hear. This has been made a "top priority" for me to resolve and it's been frustrating because there doesn't seem to be a "smoking gun" and in the meanwhile management and users are cursing the good name of NetApp. Michael Cope Unix Systems Administrator Isis Pharmaceuticals mcope(a)isisph.com

We've had the same issue in isolated cases on our filers running 6.1R1P1. Our clients are running NAV CE. What have you found out about Norton Antivirus Corporate edition in this combination? If you disable oplocks on the qtrees which are experiencing the problem, then this should temporarily resolve your problem. I forwarded your email to engineering and they should be contacting you. Has anyone seen intermittent problems when users try to save Excel or Powerpoint files to a share on the filer? Also, what are some of the strategies for dealing with oplock break timeout issues? I've been working with NetApp support on these issues but I'd like other opinions. I'm running an 820 filer, DATAOntap 6.1.1r1, and I have a 4-port, 10/100 full duplex vif.

Nixon - By default the filer updates the NIS group cache once a day. Bug in /etc/sysconfigtab (ONTAP 6.1.1R1)

Hmm, just noticed (after returning home after a service window) that the filer I just installed another FC card (X2030B) in slot 2, didn't like the card in that position. The error message in the autosupport mail was: sysconfig: QLogic ISP 2100 32-bit Fibre Channel card (PN X2030B) in slot 2 must be in one of these slots: 8,7,6,3,3,1. It didn't hit me untill I spent 10 minutes talking to someone at the frontline of NetApp Support, that I did install the card in the correct slot (I did verify with the system configuration tool in NOW before installing). I blame the time of night, but as more time spent looking at the error message, I still could not shake the thought that something was wrong with the pattern "8,7,6,3,3,1" According to the lady, (and BUG 54796) the work-around was to ignore the error (slot 2 is supported) or move the card and wait for the next release of ONTAP. I edited the sysconfig instead to read allow F740 X2030B 3 8,7,6,3,2,1 1 and 'voila', sysconfig -c did not complain anymore. Fairly straight forward. There is documentation out there if you search the NOW site. I have it but, it's on my other PC. I'll send it to you when I get a chance. Basically, all you do is an OnTap upgrade. Just unzip the new system files, not the boot disks, in the /etc directory, enter "download", halt the Filer. Swap heads and boot up. Be careful about things like NIC slot numbers, hostnames, netbios names, ip addresses, DNS, NIS and things like that. Other words, if you're using the onboard ethernet on your 740, its name is 'hostname'-e0. If you go to Gb-E or even another 10/100 port on the 840, your host name will change to 'hostname'-e8 or something.... This may screw up your DNS and possibly NIS. So, my point is, review the entire config and think about what may change and the possible ramifications. It seems my filer (F720, ONTAP 5.3.6R2) caches NIS group lookups even if nis.group_update.enable is set to off.
