For 73 GB drives, the "right-sized" size is indeed the same for both zone and block checksums. For 36 GB disks, there's a difference of 1GB between zone and block checksum right-sizings. Since you can't use 14 disks and still have a spare, I'm doing this with one seven disk set and one six disk set. (68000 MB * 7) - 68000 MB (parity) = 408000 (68000 MB * 6) - 68000 MB (parity) = 340000 408000 MB + 340000 MB = 748000 MB 748000 MB * 0.9 = 673200 MB (lose 10% to WAFL) 673200 MB * (1 GB / 1024 MB) = 657.42 GB So... that would be 657.42 GB usable, assuming no snap reserve. Toasters, We are looking at purchasing some new DS14 shelves with 72 GB disks. In order to properly forecast our disk space growth, I was wondering if anyone out there had taken a look at the difference between real and usable disk space realized with these new shelves and drives. Basically, our environment is as follows: DS14 Shelf with 14 72 GB disks (1 RAID group of 8 disks, 1 RAID group of 6 disks), attached to a filer running DOT 6.1R1P1. Okey, sorry for the second reply, but I understand traps much better now. I don't understand what you mean about "without killing it"? Do you mean running the script I wrote ala traps, thereby meaning "killing the script". Or instead are you insinulating that traps can have adverse effects on the Filer? I can't see how the latter can be true, so please elaborate if you would. For my purposes, error detection and reporting, traps seem to be the way to go, however I'm reluctant to use them for the following reasons: 1) Traps add a layer of complexity that is uncomfortable 2) Traps make any application very difficult to easily distribute. This is mostly due to the added necessity to run and configure a trap daemon. 3) It still doesn't replace the need for direct OID querries, in that traps are triggered when the netapp thinks they should... I don't yet trust OnTap that much. 4) In writing an application to report and notify on the traps you now have to write an application to parse the traps logs from trapd, rather than let an OID value set a variable directly. This considerably can add to complexity, since I don't want reporting to occur if it doesn't have to. Can anyone shed so light that might reassure me? Is anyone using traps in custom applications at their site with some pointers? I only really became interested in traps when I looked for them in the MIB and found all the traps to be fault related and mostly proactive which is a BIG plus. Helpful hints from experience are appreciated. I'm not too familiar with the issue but Solaris PC NetLink is free and does some neat things: Solaris PC NetLink (based on AT&T Advanced Server for Unix) delivers native Windows NT network services--which include directory, authentication, and file-and-print services--on Solaris servers. Users continue to receive the full functionality of the services exactly as if they were running on a Windows NT server. This way users get more access to their files and data. No. I don't know how they work well enough yet. In my understanding thus far traps give you the ability To both poll and modify SNMP OID values. The reason I'm Liking SNMP is because I'm _not_ risking a value change... This means that an idiot can check the netapp status with SNMP with no danger of harming the system. That's why I like SNMP. Purhaps this afternoon I'll study traps a bit more...... trying to make SDLTs work on F840 filer

We just upgraded our F840 to Ontap-6.1.2 specifically to get Super DLT suppport. We're also running the latest firmware 3.1_i1. We rebooted after connecting scsi diff cable to drive. sysconfig -t shows no tape drives present on system. Connected filer back to DLT 7000 and the filer see the lower density drives. Anyone using SDLTs tape drives yet? Doesn't seem to be much to the configuration, so not much room for error. Anna Mc.

I know that Linux can mount up a ntfs cifs share on a filer using smbmount - is there anything out there that one can use for Solaris? looking for ways to mount up our nt file shares on Solaris 8 boxes. sun had a product for mounting up nt boxes (solstice nfs). this required the nfs client to be running on the nt side. anyone aware of anything else? thx - jc James C. UCD SNMP and NetApp MIBs

Hello Toasters. I'm trying to write a simple dainty application to check for drive failures in our Filers. I'm going to implement this app in a PERL script which will use UCD SNMP to pull variables from the Filers. The problem is that when I walk the SNMP tree on a Filer I only get network statistics. I'm getting info in the following manner: # export MIBFILE="/usr/local/share/snmp/mibs/netapp_1_5.mib" # snmpwalk -v 1 bigfiler public I get about 2027 lines of output with IP, TCP, UDB, SNMP stats, plus address translation tables. But what I really want to see is the the RAID tables. Any idea what I need to do? I've found no help elsewhere on the net, including NetApp's NOW site.
