We use SQL and VLD just one year now. We are very happy with it. The performance is very high. We use a separate volume for our logs. So we have 1 volume for the data with several QTREE's (one for every database) and 1 volume for the logs. This is because there is a difference between write/read behaviour (logs = write; data = read). The performance is much better when you split logs and data. Of course, more disks in your raidgroup gives more performance (5 spindles of 72 GB disks for data). For the logs, we use just 2 spindles, but that is no problem. We use that volumes only for VLD. We have some other volumes on the same filer for other applications (file server, ...). When you want more details, please contact me. Performance impact of 6.3 to 6.4 upgrade?

Does anyone have any concrete experience with what the performance impact of the WAFL reorg that upgrading from 6.3.x to 6.4.x causes is? I have some very loaded (almost disk bound) 960C's running 6.3.2, which I need to upgrade to 6.4.1 (because I'm told that the new DS14 Mk2 shelves that we're adding are not supported by 6.3.x). And I'm worried about the performance impact of the upgrade is: how much disk/CPU increase it uses while it runs, and how long the reorg typically takes. We currently have several SQL 2000 Servers accessing databases and logs on an F720 via CIFS. It works very well. We've not used the VLD option but do plan to implement it for Exchange by the end of the year. We'll probably use CIFS for as long as MS supports it for our SQL databases. As far as performance goes, we saw a small performance hit with our SQL databases primarily because of the way that our volume is layed out. We have a single 12 spindle volume that is shared with 3 SQL Servers, 3 Notes Servers, and user homes. As you can see this is not ideal, but in this configuration, our SQL Servers still perform remarkably well. By the way, we are going to separate our volumes eventually so that SQL has it's own set of disks. My recommendation would be to set your filer up with it's own SQL volume if at all possible. SNMP and VIFS

Hi all, This is my first posting so apologies if I get syntax wrong. I have a 940c cluster and have setup 3 network card in a multi VIF and then a Single VIF. When I unplug a cable from the config I get a message on the console e11a down but the SNMP message sent to the Management Station was TRAP 4. The mib has been loaded and traps for machine being rebooted and Volume full are decoded correctly. What am i doing wrong ? Regards Paul

command to tell you what kind of shelves you have

Is there a command that will output what type of shelves are attached to a netapp. The closes I was able to come was "environment status shelf" but that doesn't tell me whether they are FC7, FC8 or FC9 shelves. Thanks Dan

Is there any built in utility for file compression

I don't think there is but I am just wondering if there is any built in utilities in the Netapps to do on the fly file compression as they are being written to the file system? Thanks Dan
