[Fwd: More than one Admin machine for Netapps ???]

Anyone got any ideas about this one? I have a need to write a script to create qtrees on a Netapps Server. I have a UNIX Bourne shell script which does the job, however I need to set up windows permissions on them, specifically administrator = Full Access everyone = Read Access The default permissions are not appropriate when looked at from a Windows environment, so ideally I'd like to rewrite the script (it's not rocket science) to run from a windows environment and for it to carry on and do cacls operations on the qtree created. We've got Services for UNIX installed and have installed the Unix Tools but when I try to do an rsh to the Netapps, I get "permission denied" and "can't establish connection" messages. Anyone know how I can get around this? Can I somehow specify a second admin machine which is allowed to rsh? At the moment, the admin machine is a UNIX box. Resetting Parameters

What's the command to "unset" all the parameters and have a filer come up as if running 'setup'? I have a filer I setup on site in the US that needs to be shipped to the UK. I'd like it to prompt for new values immediately rather than wait for several processes to timeout and have someone login and run 'setup' again. 6.5.2R1 and F85 with external shelf ?

Hi I noticed the 6.5.2R1 is arrived :-) O happiness ! I read few days ago a note that told there is a problem between 6.5.2XX and F85 with an external shelf. Is this bug solved or do I have to wait to install another version onto our F85 "with shelf" ? Thanks -- Regards, Frank Bonnet

Alfred, Yes, I'm looking for Disk to Disk to Tape solution. Currently, Veritas uses the R200 as a storage media for incremental backups. The full and Filer backup goes directly to tape since I don't have enough disk space to dump all the fulls to the R200. For the Filers, Veritas can't backup NDMP device to disk. So far from what I read, FalconStor has a pretty nice VLT solution. Hi Toasters, This is a bit off topic. I'm looking for a disk backup solution to complement our current tape backup environment. Currently, we are using Veritas DataCenter v4.5, on Solaris, and Quantum P6000/7000 library using SDLT. A lot of incremental backup are already going to the R200 but full and NDMP still goes to tape. Interested in something like a virtual tape solution that presents virtual tapes to Veritas and backup to the disk backend, R200. Also, if the virtual tape supports NDMP for the Filer backup that will be great. Appreciate any suggestions. RE: virtual tape

We use a device from Data Domain (the DD200 Restorer) which appears to NetBackup as a tape device and can be used with the Filers via NDMP. The appliance uses a lot of the same ideas as OnTap (apparently one of the first engineers at Data Domain was a former NetApp engineer) in how they perform data compression. As an example, even though the physical specs of the box are ~3TB storage, we're seeing data availability of up to 20-25TB (we can maintain about 6 weeks worth of full and incremental backups of our GroupWise and Filer on this appliance). Data Domain also has a new upgrade which will do multi-site mirroring of DD200 data (much like SnapMirror) If anyone is interested in more info on the box and what we're seeing out of it, let me know. Why is that safer? It depends on which version of ONTAP you are running. Before 6.5 you could destroy the volume from FilerView without first taking it offline. BE CAREFUL. There of course is the warning message. "vol destroy" will only work against offline volumes. If you try to "vol destroy" the online volume, the command will puke and die with a message about the volume needing to be offline first. From what's below, Vol0(1), the foreign volume with disk 8a.13, will be offline. It can't be brought online because it's both incomplete and foreign. Vol0, the real and active root volume, will be online. This can easily be confirmed with a "vol status" command.
