SVM-DR and root vol LS mirrors

Hi All All of our SVM-DR destinations were setup per the Express Guide which doesn't instruct the user to setup the LS mirrors on the target SVM. We therefore don't have root mirrors on the destination SVMs. I can't think of any technical reason why you couldn't do it and I'm leaning toward setting up the mirrors but wanted to see what others think. Do you setup LS mirrors on your SVM-DR destinations? Any reason not to? SVM-DR between two 9.1P5 clusters. Thanks Steve

DNS Configured Check - High Impact on ConfigAdvisor

Hey, can anyone explain to me why "DNS Configured Check" is rated as high impact on SVMs in ConfigAdvisor 5? I'm not using DNS at all in any of my SVMs, all connections are IP-based and all my reports now look pretty bad with x High Impact Issues where x is the number of SVMs. Also, the Management LIF configurations are rated as Low Impact and in my point of view it's also not necessary to have separate management LIFs for SVMs if I do not give access to them to my tenants or require any Snapmanager integrations. Any idea how I can tell ConfigAdvisor to just ignore those things? 7-mode DOT downgrade question

Folks, We have a rebranded NetApp array (IBM N-series) that we upgrade the ONTAP from 8.1 to 8.2 a few months back. In upgrading to 8.2, the protocol licensing keys were upgraded to the long format and also bound to the controller's S/N. Recently we had to replace the motherboard and now we've lost licensing on the one controller. The partner node is still licensed, both nodes are running. I am thinking about doing a "cf takeover" from the partner node and trying to downgrade the ONTAP back to 8.1 version on the controller with the replaced motherboard. Then reapplying our original 8.1 license keys and then upgrading back to ONTAP 8.2 version, while leaving workloads running on the partner node. Has anyone tried anything similar in the past? Any potential gotchas you can share? Thanks, Eric

Ontap 9.2 aggregate inline deduplication visible to volume owners?

Hi, I was reading quite some docs on the new AID (aggregate inline deduplication) feature in Ontap 9.2 but failed to find out if the space savings would be visible to the volume owners when mounting them via NFS. F.ex. if you provide an iSCSI LUN on a deduplicated volume to a tenant, he will not see the deuplication savings because they will only be at the volume level which he cannot see. For filebased storage, like CIFS or NFS shares, the tenant will immediately see the space savings due to deduplication. Is this also the case for AID or will only the volume footprint shrink on the aggregate level (since all volumes participating in AID need to be thin anyways) but the space usage in the volume will still show the non-deduped size for the tenant? SRA Issues

Hello, Environment: SRA 4P1, SRM 6.5, VMWare 6.5, ONTAP 9.1P2, NFS. We seem to be having problems achieving connectivity to a target SVM via SRA at one particular site, we get the following message: Error – StorageFault: Unable to find snapmirror for controller StorageControllerBean This was previously set up and working OK, but after a failover and failback was completed successfully, a subsequent test failover (clone only) failed for reasons unknown, now when we review the logs and try and probe the target vserver from SRA we get all sorts of errors. We have removed the vserver from SRA and tried adding it but get the same message when running the vserver add command in SRA. Doesn't seem to be much published on this so hence my email to the toaster experts! I thought it was something to do with stale load sharing mirrors at the recovery site (place where we are having issues) and it being out of sync somehow but I dont think this is the case, I have also updated the load sharing mirror manually to no avail. This feels like a bug but I wanted to see if anyone else was using the latest version of SRA and had similar issues? Thanks

The schedule has been set up to run daily and it seems to have done that for Volume5 and 6 today, but not for the other volumes. When I do manually run a snapvault update on Volume1 now, it goes immediately into the Quiescing state and afterwars updates the lagtime to 00:00:00: So I have to do that for all the relations which are behind every other day and to me it seems as if they're not really behind and this is just a display bug? Also, I have no idea why Volume7, A and B show such high lag times - they do get updated regularly too and when I run a manual update on them now, it also goes back to 00:00:00 replication lag immediately after the manual update run has completed, but a bit later, it changes back to this insanely high lag time. I'm running 8.2.4P5 7-Mode here. Completely open CIFS share in 8.3.2

Greetings, I need to allow some MSDOS 6.2/Windows 3.1 systems to map a dedicated drive share. Is there a way to set up a CIFS only share that will not require authentication? I've set up permissions to give "everyone" full control, but it still asks for a username or password when they try to connect. I have been able to do this with a share on a W7 system, but I'd rather it go to a more robust destination. Couple of random questions

Hi all just wondered if anyone can just answer a couple of questions for me. 1 - We are migrating from a number of 7-mode filers to c-mode clusters and the clusters have AFF and FAS HA pairs, management do not want to move someone who is on HDD now onto flash to then move them back to HDD when the disk shelfs are all sorted out. I have suggested using QOS limits while the volumes are on the flash storage but the storage architect has said that it won't work and the customer will see a performance improvement even with QOS on but can't really explain the why behind what he is saying. This has put the whole migration on hold is there any reason a 1000IOPS limit on flash would give better performance that a 1000IOPS limit on HDD the only thing I can see happen is if the requests go over 1000 they will be served up at the start of the second and then there would be a pause until the next second. 2 - Has anyone had been using compaction on HDD aggregates I am thinking we can enable this on our vault volumes but have no idea what the performance hit on the controller would be currently our vault is hanging off of a FAS2554 but this will probably be getting swapped out for a FAS8020 during the working in question 1 so would like to think about saving as much space as is possible. FreeBSD on NetApp hardware

Hi, We have some abandoned NetApp 6290 hardware, that was replaced by FAS8080, and I want to run FreeBSD on it. The original software, OnTap, is also based on FreeBSD. Somebody once told me that it is simple, something like "just change the kernel loader address". Does anyone have more information about this? It would be so cool to run ZFS and bhyve on them (just for fun, not for production). Meanwhile, I am going to try netboot FreeBSD/amd64 and see how far I get.
