NetApp & Portable Home Dirs (OS X)

We have been providing networked home directories to our AD Windows users off a NetApp for a number of years. Now we are looking at extending that to our OS X users and running into some issues. If we use network home dirs, OS X (10.5.x) and CIFS direct to the filer everything semms to work fine (the OS X clients and the filer are all in AD). The problem comes when we try to use portable home directories, which is where the OS X client has a local copy of the home dir and syncs to the filer. We have no problems if it is syncing to an OS X server over AFP or to a Windows server over CIFS. If we go direct to the filer over CIFS, any files deleted on the OS X client are not properly tracked such that when it syncs back to the filer the files reappear (instead of being deleted from the filer). There are also library files which fail to sync. When we remove the filer as the storage all the problems go away. We've tested against 7.2.4 and 7.3. path to cifs share is \\irfl2.company.corp\irfiles however i want it to be mounted via \\irfiles how do i go about doing this ? irfiles.company.corp is in dns already -- -- Chaim Rieger

Do fcp/iscsi nodenames change on a cluster head upgrade?

Hello All, We are in the process of planning for an upgrade of a FAS3050 cluster in single_image cfmode to a FAS3170 cluster which will also be in single_image cfmode. We have a few questions remaining: * Do the iscsi nodenames change with a head upgrade? If yes, will this require us to change the iscsi nodename to the old systems for the iscsi clients to be able to seamlessly reconnect to the SAN after the upgrade? * Does the FCP nodename change with the head upgrade? If yes, will it require us to change it back to the original systems for seamless reconnecting of clients? * Do the lun serial's change with a head upgrade and does this affect clients in any way? Netapp CPU types

Hi toasters, i am wondering if anybody has an official overview of netapps controller hardware, and espacially the CPU types. I found different sources telling me different things. e.g. i found an article on wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NetApp_Filer) saying that the FAS6040 is one die with dual-core. A poster from netapp states that it has two single-core dies. Can anybody sched some light onto this?? My biggest interesst is how the FAS6040 compares to the FAS6030. VMware on Netapp and snapshot

We are using Netapp as our backend for vmdk files on a NFS volume with de-duplication enabled. I am keeping two weeks worth of snapshots. Currently there are two NFS volumes, 4 ESX host server and about 60 guest servers. We are adding about 2 -3 virtual servers a week. What I am noticing that snap shot is taking a lot of space. I have set the reserve to 30% but it is taking about 35% per volume. Couple of times it has happened that a snap shot will happen during the day and the volume will be almost out of space and then VM guest will go offline as there is no log space to write. Once we clear space the guest machines come back on line. Is this normal for a VM storage volume to take up so much space in snap shot? We are getting almost 50% gain by doing deduplication which is pretty good. Any suggestion is appreciated. ESX FCP host utilities

Hi & Thanks for the support you're about to give =) NETAPP is a FAS3050C: netapp1 and netapp2 I've installed the ESX FCP host utilities 5.0R1, successfuly but the configuration fails WARNING: The installation process was unable to login to all the connected NetApp storage system(s) due to improper credentials: Please specify the correct credentials for the following controller(s): netapp1 The script was unable to determine the correct settings for your configuration. After the proper credentials have been determined, run the following commands: /opt/netapp/santools/config_hba --configure --access <controller>:<password> So I enter the following command since were not using SSL ./config_hba --configure --access netapp1:1234 and gives me the following: WARNING: The installation process was unable to login to all the connected NetApp storage system(s) due to improper credentials: Please specify the correct credentials for the following controller(s): netapp2 when replace netapp1 with netapp2 the error message changes below from netapp2 to netapp1, confusing hey. We allocated storage to the ESX server from both node netapp nodes. Any ideas on what i should do i already have a case open 2000474215 for those with access. SMVI 1.0.1

I have ESX 3.5 rev2 (don't quote me on the rev, but we are 1 rev back from the latest esx 3.5.x), running SMVI 1.0.1 on our Virtual Center host (windows 2003 R2 sp2). We are testing SMVI 1.0.1 on our 6030's running ontap 7.24 via FCP. We are able to take snapshots at the datastore level. When we go to restore, here is what we are doing: taking a snapshot (love snapshots, they work real fast, etc) Once completed, we snapmirror to another filer via SMVI (no big deal so far) We delete a windows VM (again, simulating OH NO YOU DIDN"T delete that vm....) Go to do a restore of a vm via thees instructions: http://now.netapp.com/NOW/knowledge/docs/SnapManager/relsmvi_10/html/softwa… successfully completed :jumping: wait, no VM appears in my VIC :,( I can go to the vmdk and right click and add to inventory, but our VAR said this is not how it should work. I called support, and they said it should be fixed in version 2. Sounded fishy, but support is usually right on. Hello All I have recently been transferred to the designing side of storage...Can you guys guide me on where to start from...??? Any good guide/best practices to start with ... ??? i have heard that when you place a filer order with NetApp, they send you a design/cabling document... to help connect the active/active configuration (as ordered) ...is it so???
