Size of installations ?

I was wondering how much storage people are putting behind their storage heads ? I can see that a 3170 nominally goes up to 840TB or 420 per head but do people actually put that much storage on a single unit ? I can see that the V series supports SVC, how common is this configuration ? We need to be aiming for about a half Petabyte per rack, I can see how I could do this with a DDN S2A9900 behind an SVC, I would be interested to hear peoples opinion.

NETAPP (DECRU) Software Issue

Hi guys... Dont know whether this is the right forum to ask...but anyways.... We have E-510 in cluster configuration... Recently strange behavior has started.... Issue-1. I am unable to logon to the cluster through Decru Management Console or through PuTTy...but the same user ID and password is fully functional through WebUI....ON ALL MEMBERS OF THE CLUSTER Issue-2. Recently one of the cluster member (DFE_61) has an even stranger problem...From other cluster members, I can ping the virtual IP on DFE_61 i.e. virtual IP 10.40.200.58...but not the real IP 10.40.200.61.....even from DFE_61 i can ping other devices on the subnet 10.40.200.x and the virtual IPs of other cluster members...but not the real IPs of cluster members. The cluster is up but WebUI shows one of the member's (DFE_61) link down. The Database group state is ABORTED and replication state is RECOVER.The log on DFE_61 shows Software problem PRC2 1:6 watchdog 1182......PRC2 1:7 PRC2 1:8 PRC2 1:9 PRC2 1:10 PRC2 18:9 etc. Tech Support not available till monday... guys please help... Ontap 7.2.6 is under investigating

Hi, after Announcing Ontap 7.2.6 a few days ago, now it is not downloadable from the NOW-Page. Anyone know whats happend? Regards Michael

Network routing question

Does a host route override a network route on a netapp head? I have an interface plugged into one switch with IP 192.168.5.6 netmask 255.255.255.0 and I have a second interface plugged into a different switch with IP 192.168.5.7 netmask 255.255.255.0 One switch is "primary" and the other is "standby" for redundancy. There is obviously a routing ambiguity here. Which port does the filer use to reach the 192.168.5 network? It seems to have picked one port (fortunately on the 'active' switch) which I see listed in the routing table. The other port is not listed in any routes at all. But I was wondering if I could add explicit host routes to the IP addresses on the standby switch. I tried this and it didn't work (ping failed). The destination IP that I tried to ping was on another filer head. It occurred to me that I probably need to set the corresponding route on the other head, so I did that. The routes are listed in the route table, but ping still does not work. I checked the ARP table and neither head has the MAC address of the other in its ARP table. So I suppose that despite the host route, the ARP broadcast is going out the wrong interface. I think we need separate subnets here but I'm just the storage guy and did not configure the hosts that are plugged into these two switches. Things are working, all traffic is on the active switch. nearstore & PAM cards

All, Just out of curiosity - has anyone used a PAM card with a nearstore license? The thought that I had here is that nearstore readjusts the read:write cache ratio in onboard memory, allocating a larger percentage for writes and system usage. Pam cards are dedicated to reads, and thus might allow for more "normal" performance even on a nearstore system... thoughts? I'm just kind of spitballing here. -Nick

Sophos Antivirus for NetApp

We recently had a brown out in one of our smaller data center, and when the power came back, the AC units did not kick in on time. The filers came online and promptly heated up, causing over temperature alarms to go off. These NetApp units are in standard NetApp cabinets so the only way (that we know of) to shutdown was to be physically on-site to turnoff the breakers to these cabinets. The question to all toasters is how do you remotely turn off the shelves when you have a situation like this? Most of the heat is generated by the shelves, and we couldn't find a way to shutdown the shelves remotely. Shutting down the heads don't help as the disks are still spinning and generating heat. Do you have remote controlled power outlets for these L6-20 /L6-30 power connectors that these shelves use? Can you recommend some solutions? thanks in advance -Sto Rage

Multpath for Fedora 4 Appliance

Excuse the non-filer related question, but I'm kinda desperate and I know some folks here probably diddled with this one. I work for a company that makes a Network Management appliance based on Fedora 4. Hey it had what they needed when they locked down the LAMP platform 5 years ago, and as the saying goes "it works for us". Next gen product beta's in about 2 weeks and is based on CentOS 5.2... So one of our major customers wants to locate our DB (MySQL) on a SAN fabric and they have purchased Qlogic QLE 2460's for the DB host. We include the drivers in the locked down minimalized Fedora so getting the cards going is as simple as "insert and boot". My question is: The customer (understandably) wants to use dual cards and Multipathing and EMC will laugh at us trying to consider PowerPath. So I'm looking at "device-mapper-multipath". Anybody mess with this ever? I'm just beginning my research, and as a wild stab I found an OLD version of the device-mapper package (0.4.4-2.3) and the Sysfsutils (1.1.0-1) that it needed and installed it on a lab version of our product. So at least the package would install. Now to try and get it working. The customer has the luxury of a lab instance of our set up and might be willing to take a stab at this with me if it'll come within100 yards of working at all reliably. I'd love to hear any comments of folks who've run this in the past or currently use Multipath in a Red Hat derivative. Thanks in advance! -Bob B.

Throttling

Hi Toasters We run our snapmirrors overnight mostly, to a DR site which just happens to be a working office. Sometimes they're still running in the morning, and they eat all the bandwidth. We throttle them in the snapmirror management. We do this manually and its a pain and sometime we forget etc. What I'd like to do is (probably) script and schedule some SSH commands to set the bandwidth throttle on the volumes so that they are restricted during working hours, but open out of hours. Is there a global method of doing this, or do I have configure each of my snapmirror vols separately? Also, never actually scripted SSH before, I cant find any decent pointers, is this a regular thing to do with filers?
