OSSV being abusive of the secondary filer.

Greetings, I'm running OSSV3.0 on some RH5.4 clients to a 6040 NearStore running 8.1 with 10G networking. The process works OK, but when I have an OSSV transfer running, the system load on the filer goes to 100%, it starts behaving very sluggishly, and the regular filer to NearStore backups start running very long, in some cases 2-3 days when they should complete in no more than 6 hours. I've gone through the installation and best practices guide and don't see anything about tuning the secondary. I've looked at sysstat during the load times and disk and network throughput are hardly above 60 MB/s. I know I can try throttling the backup, but it doesn't appear to be a throughput or bottleneck issue. Has anyone else seen this or is there anything I can do to help this? $BACKUP_PRODUCT <-> NetApp integration.

Hello all; We are exploring a couple of different ways to integrate our backup product (CommVault FWIW) with our NetApps (N-Series to be exact). CommVault integrates by leveraging FlexClone and SnapRestore. This operates at the volume level and so we either grab the entire volume or nothing at all. No way to get granularity into specific files or folders. Due to licensing constraints, we can't just grab "everything". This may change in the future, but until then we're looking at several options including setting up dedicated flexvols where VM's which need backups are placed and other flexvols where VM's we won't back up are placed. CV also has integration natively with vCenter, but there are some performance downsides here. How do some of you out there handle this sort of scenario? Thanks, Ray

WORKAROUND: AutoSupport cannot connect to url https://support.netapp.com/

Well, I followed Netapp support's recommendation to add a static route route add 216.240.18.16 <gatewayIP> 1 I post this followup under the category of WORKAROUND since the ASUPs are flowing now, but IMO the root cause is not determined (it should not be necessary to add this static route if the routing table is being obeyed) More info: Our firewall is set to LOG egress (outgoing) connections For the working node I could see the connections made from the default gateway net VIF But, on the problem node, this connection was being attempted from one of the other VIFs (not in the default gateway net) I've asked netapp support to review the fresh ASUPs to see what they might reveal about these apparent routing issues. thanks On Jun 4, 2012, at 11:00 AM, Jayanathan, David wrote: > I am very interested in what you find out. shrinking snap mirror destination volume size does not return space

I'm teaching our storage team to use the System Manager to resize volumes (both source and destination snap mirror volumes) Then one team member noticed this old issue - when the SM src/dest pair volumes are shrunk - the new size is not reflected on the destination - even after a SM update. Last year I wrote about this http://www.vmadmin.info/2011/04/shrinking-snapmirror-destination.html and the solution at the time was to break the SM to have the destination space reclaimed. But is there a better method? Cluster mode - Market vs field

Hi all, I've recently attended an official event where people from NetApp in few words said: "DOT 8 7-mode has done its time, it's over, it has been a great os but It's now time to move and push DOT 8 Cluster Mode, everytime, everywhere..." and this also if with a simple two node HA system, including 2220! What do you think about? Also let us assume that cluster mode can (I add 'theoretically') do all what 7 mode does, don't you think that is quite premature to trumpet this out? Regards,

Thanks. I did read up a bit on fcinfo and was considering it for my 2003 servers. I've learned that 2008 includes much of the fcinfo functionality already. I don't know about command-line utilities, but if you're familiar with wmi then you can get everything you need, including the firmware (which was what I was looking for). QLogic HBA firmware

We're in the middle of a fairly urgent process to review and remediate our servers' compatibility with onTAP 7.3.3p6. We've got everything we need except HBA firmware levels. Does anyone know of a good WMI query we could run against multiple servers that would return the HBA firmware level? Most of the HBAs are HP-OEM'd QMH2462, running under Window 2003 and 2008R2. I'm looking into SANSurfer, but if I can avoid adding new software to my servers then that would be preferred. Thanks. Disk inventory out of sync.

Greetings, We have a 3140 cluster running 7.3.5.1P4 at one of our sites. There were 2 drive failures (not the same raid group), hot spares kicked in, and the hard drives replaced. Everything seems fine to here. The problem comes in because the partner is showing a disk mismatch. It sees all the drives, but the owner of the replacement drives doesn't in some cases. If I do a "disk show" or an "aggr status -r" on the disk owner, it sees the disks. Any of the "storage show disk <option>" commands on the owner do not show the replacement drives. Will a cluster takeover/giveback wake up the filer or are there any other tricks to get everything on the disk owner to show the drives? Firmware Automation

NetApp states this is "unsupported", so I'm posting this here for ideas. For the last 10 years or so we have used a process to automatically download and push disk and shelf firmware to the filers. The process begins with a wget to grab the all.tar file: wget --http-user=userid --http-passwd=password -P /path/to/put/it http://download.netapp.com/download/tools/diskfw/bin/all.gz Now with the recent changes on the support site this year, that method no longer works. I tracked down the new location and tried this: wget --http-user=userid --http-passwd=password -P /path/to/put/it http://support.netapp.com/NOW/download/tools/diskfw/bin/all.gz but it fails, even with a few other flags I tried, the best I could get was a login.html file downloaded. So it's clear that Netapp is redirecting the request for authentication. I looked into wget a further and tried to login, grab the cookies, save them to a file and then use that authentication to grab the file, no luck there either. wget --no-check-certificate --keep-session-cookies --save-cookies cookies.txt --post-data 'user=userid&password=password&postpreservationdata=""' https://login.netapp.com/oamforms/login.html wget --no-check-certificate --load-cookies cookies.txt -P /path/to/put/it http://support.netapp.com/NOW/download/tools/diskfw/bin/all.gz So that's my dilemma. Host based Lun snapshots (snapdrive) with OnCommand or Protection Manager

Anyone worked out how to do Host based lun snapshots (using snapdrive) with OnCommand or Protection Manager and policies ? It seems utterly amazing you have to write a batch file and call sdcli and then setup a scheduled tasks to take snapshots with snapdrive. We have a lot of luns mapped to hosts and its going to get very messy with all these batch files running.
