OS behaviors.

Greetings, We upgraded a pair of 6080s and 6040s from 7.3.3P5 to 7.3.5.1P4 at the first of the year. Within 1 hour of the upgrade, our OpenNMS server started getting timeouts for SNMP polling. We had ~130 per head for the 6080s in the next 2 days. We had 0 in the prior 2 months that I checked. We also noticed the average CPU load for each head went from ~40% to close to 60% utilization comparing December to January. Anytime the cluster is in a failover mode, we get quite a few customer complaints due to slowness. While I can't say for certain we did not have this slowness before, none of us remember any complaints when the cluster was failed before. Obviously trying to run 120% utilization on 1 filer instead of 80% will cause this issue :-) The 6040 cluster did not give the polling errors, but it looks like the CPU load is higher on them also. The load is usually low enough to gracefully cover a cluster failover. I've had a case opened since the first of the year and it looks like we are now out of options and ideas with no explanation or resolution. At this point our plan is to roll back to the 7.3.3P5 OS since it seemed to behave better. Since there is no identifiable problem or solution, it makes us unwilling to jump to a newer OS since we have no reason to believe the issue isn't inherited by later revisions. Rolling back to a known good OS seems to make the most sense. We will roll the 6080 cluster back first and see how it works out before we roll the 6040 cluster. My question to the group is whether anyone else has had a similar issue but did jump to a newer OnTap release that fixed the issues? fpolicy and open source tools

I've looked at Likewise for their security auditing via fpolicy and it looks pretty good on paper. Before going down that road, though, is anyone aware of any open source tools that will grab and present the same type of data? (who attempted to read/write/delete/change security on what, when, and if it was successful) I also wonder if anyone knows where the fpolicy data is kept? FAS2020 and DS14MK2 Mis-cabled

Hello Toasters I have a FAS2020 Active/Active system with one DS14MK2-AT shelf attached. This weekend I intend to hot-add an additional DS14MK2-AT shelf. However, I believe the existing loop is cabled incorrectly. I'm hoping someone on this list can give me some pointers to confirm whether the cabling can be corrected without taking the filers offline. I really want to fix the cabling before I attempt to hot-add the new shelf. The current cabling is: CNTRL-A/0a -> AT-FCX-A -> CNTRL-A/0b And CNTRL-B/0a -> AT-FCX-B -> CNTRL-B/0b According to the FAS2020 installation flyer, the end of each loop path should terminate with the opposite controller's 0b port (not the same controller as above). Is it possible/advisable to disconnect the cable from both controllers' 0b port and swap them over to get to the correct setup? So long as I don't lose one of the AT-FCX modules during the switchover it seems like it would be okay. I'm going to open a case with support but I was hoping some of the experts on this list might have some thoughts/recommendations/horror stories you can share? FAS2040 configurations

I'm trying to source a small NetApp for a client, and I'm being told that I can get a FAS2040 with 12*1TB in both single- and dual-controller configs, but if I want 12*2TB it's got to be single. Specifically: "2) FAS2040 Dual Controller with 12 * 2TB SATA disks - The 2TB disks in a FAS2040 are not available in a dual controller configuration" Which seems odd to me. 3 TB drives showing odd output for disk show.

Greetings, I just added some shelves of 3 TB drives to a 3140 running 8.1 RC2. For some reason a lot of them seem to munge the shelf address in "disk show". When I run "storage show disk" they all look fine. Here is a limited output: 3c.03.10 woodcut (151733860) Pool0 YHHN0GGA woodcut (151733860) 3c.SHJ00000000711C.17 woodcut (151733860) Pool0 YHHKNR7A woodcut (151733860) The second entry is adding "SHJ00000000711C" in the middle of the shelf address. I've traced the new string to being the shelf serial number. My 1 and 2 TB shelves still work fine. About 75% of my 3 TB drives are stuffing the serial number in the middle. I've made sure the filer knows about the disks and it has a proper disk qualification package, etc, and the disk and shelf firmware is up to date. I was curious if anyone else had run into this. snapdrive failing to map lun

This process was working as of yesterday. Had an issue on the server and had to reboot and now I'm getting this odd error. This is a linux host running RHEL 5.2. It's connecting to a 3270 running 8.0.2P3. This linux server has a script that connects to 2 luns, each on different filers. Both filers give the same error when running the command below: [root@server bin]# snapdrive snap connect -lun data/disk disk_2012-04-17 -snapname filer:/vol/volume/data/disk:daily-2012-04-17 connecting filer:/vol/volume/data/disk: creating unrestricted volume clone filer:/vol/lun_data ... success mapping new lun(s) ... done discovering new lun(s) ... *failed* Cleaning up ... - LUN filer:/vol/lun_data/disk__2012-04-17 ... deleted - deleting volume clone ... filer:/vol/rootdb_data done 0001-476 Admin error: Unable to discover the device associated with filer:/vol/data/disk_2012-04-17. If multipathing in use, there may be a possible multipathing configuration error. Please verify the configuration and then retry. Multipathing was not previously in use on this server. I tried this with and without multipathd running. Anyone know what might be causing this?

Problems with OC5's database

Hi, Ever since upgrading from OpsMan to OC5, I've had nothing but problems with it, or its database to be specific. I recently spent 4 months working with NetApp support on one issue where the NetApp agents were causing OC5 to run out of interprocess communication semaphores thus preventing the web ui from communicating with the database. This was "solved" by removing the name of the OC5 server from all the agents so they wouldn't bother it anymore. This solved the ipcs issue, but now I still have problems with the database when trying to run and DFM-related commands from a cli. The error I always get is: Error: The DataFabric Manager server database is temporarily unavailable; error code is -103 Error: Please try again later This can go on for hours, yet the web ui, while horribly slow, is still responsive and monitoring/alerting continues. I can find nothing on the NOW site related to issues like these and am reluctant to open another support case and be told I am the only one who appears to have this problem. After the last case my OC5 installation has been poked and prodded and examined 6 ways from Sunday, and nothing found to be odd or not covered by netapp's best practices. Is anyone out there seeing these database issues? OC5 RHEL 5.7 16GB RAM 3.4GHz XEON x2 --- Scott Eno

VSC 4 and online alignment - anyone used it in anger?

Hi all, I've been testing the new functionality in VSC 4 around online re-alignment. I've done some tests with a test datastore and test VM under load, all fine. However I have an estate of over 200 datastores. Has anyone run the scan manager across all their datastores at once? Was there any noticeable impact to the VMs? As far as I can tell, I can only schedule the scan to scan everything at once. I know I could manually do batches but I need to run the scans overnight. I've found documentation around the actual online alignment function and warnings to not do too many at once, but nothing about the scan. There also seems to be no way of stopping the scan once it starts, which makes my rollback plan in my CR for this scan a bit empty looking and hard to justify. And a long shot, just out of curiosity, if anyone has any information on what the scan actually does would be interesting too. I can see it takes a VM snapshot for each VM in the datastore, then deletes it, but that's it. I've searched NOW high and low, but documentation on VSC 4 is pretty thin on the ground. Thanks, Peta

You can start with http://support.netapp.com/NOW/download/swchangelog.shtml The link is on the bottom of the Software Download page, "View Software Change Log". However, that list is not very accurate. I think they manage it by hand... I.e. OnCommand System Manager 2.0.1 is not (yet?) posted in the log. Same goes for patch releases, they are never in the log. But it's a start. Operations Manager and vfilers

I've been trying to delete a vfiler from DFM/Operations Manager. This should be simple and I've tried using the DFM command-line for that purpose: dfm vfiler delete <object> The problem I'm running into is that most of the volumes formerly hosted by that vfiler have been migrated to the hosting filer (aka, vfiler0) but they are deleted in DFM along with the vfiler. These are still valid volumes and need to be monitored, so it's kind of problematic. I've tried "re-discovering" the hosting filer after I deleted the vfiler to get the volumes to move to the "right" place and I've also tried waiting for the next monitoring interval for DFM to pick up the "new" volumes, but nothing is working at this point. The only workaround I've discovered is to re-add the destroyed vfiler to get the volumes back and stop monitoring on the vfiler itself. Any ideas on how to get DFM to "Do The Right Thing"?
