How many retries on a disk before you pre-fail?

I ran a syslog search for "retry" on this 3270 head for the last 7 days to get these disk retry messages: Aug 3 20:55:29 [na04:scsi.cmd.retrySuccess:debug]: Enclosure services device 3a.03.99: request successful after retry #1/#0: cdb 0x3c (1301). then get a frequency count to find chronic retry disks. awk '{print $12}' irt-na04.retry | sort | uniq -c | sort -nr 15 3a.06.99: 14 3a.05.99: 13 3a.03.99: 11 3a.04.99: 10 3a.02.99: 10 3a.01.99: 9 3c.00.99: 7 0a.08.99: 6 0a.07.99: 4 3a.08.99: 3 3a.07.99: 3 0b.00.99: 3 0a.05.99: 3 0a.03.99: 2 0a.06.99: 2 0a.04.99: 1 0a.02.99: 1 0a.01.99: Q: what level of retries should we look at pre failing a disk and replacing it proactively? shrinking volumes on 8.1?

What factors do I need to consider when resizing a volume downward? Will I always be able to shrink an over provisioned volume down to near the size used or do I need to worry about fragmentation or the WAFL equivalent? I ask because we've been using thin provisioning on a new filer in cases where we sense the customer might be overestimating their need (I know we're the only shop where this happens). But now that filer is about half full and we'd rather not need to stress over whether it's oversubscribed if we could just make it all Thick and reclaim any hoarded space when we need to.

Hi all As a netapp ASP I spent quite alot of my time installing netapp's at costumers site and resolving their issues and I wanted to share my recent experience with 8.1 Usually I try to avoid RC release but until recently the fas22xx didn't gave us much choice Once the 8.1 GA released I felt more free to install this release. but after I started to get performance complains from my costumers I wasn't so sure After investigating some of the complains I felt that they are justified something is off in system I can't put my finger on it but its looks the system don't perform as expected even though the system don't look busy. ndmpcopy from 6.x to 8.1

Has anyone used ndmpcopy to migrate volumes from ontap 6.5 to 8.1 without going through any intermediate steps? The 8.1 docs say qtree snapmirror doesn't support source volumes prior to 6.5, so I'm looking for success stories on possible alternatives in case it doesn't work as advertised. rsync takes a long long time, but it works fine. This is all linux data, nfs. -Jon

dfpm command assistance

For the couple of folks out there that may actually use the dfpm commands, anyone know how to designate a subnet in the following command? dfpm dataset nfsaccess -w ???.???.???.??? It won't let me use ".0/24"-type notation, so how else could I do it? x.x.x.0?

switching between cluster mode and 7 mode

Hi all, Is it trivial to switch between cluster mode and 7 mode? I understand that the data on the array will be wiped, but are there other caveats to be aware of? Are there any licensing or cost issues to be aware of? Does anyone know what additional hardware is included in the FAS 2240 Cluster mode configuration? I understand there is a switch, potentially multiple switches included in cluster mode configurations. Thanks Blake. What I like to use the old script for was displaying the list of hosts connected to the filer, especially when I have done data migrations and the admins look to me to tell them which of their hosts are connected.
