Using Cricket to Monitor Filers

Hello Toasterites, I've been playing (fighting with) Cricket on and off for awhile now. It strikes me as a tool that could be alot of help *if* you understand how it thinks. This is were I fall short. I've never gotten Cricket to work like it ought to, and it seems, IMHO, to be a poorly documented app. Most instructures and howto's simply tell you to "edit file blah and your done!". This just isn't enough juice for me. So, has anyone documented the setup of Cricket for the express purposes of monitoring various aspects of filers? The only "docs" I've found specific to filers were the comments in the netapp module for Cricket, which isn't much help. A complete "Howto Setup Cricket for NetApp Filers" would be really really helpful. It looks really easy, but I just can't seem to get my fingers around it. Hi, I have been requested to provide storage from the filer to a department running Japanese environment (Caelum application on HP-UX Japanese Locale). As far as I know, I need to create a separate volume and set the vol lang to ja. Is there anything else I need to be aware of before I go ahead? Question on gig slot assignments and fiber card assignments

I have a netapp f760 clustered running 6.01R3 with the following slot assignments: slot 9 nvram slot 8 cluster interconnect slot 7 redundant fiber loop slot 6 intel fiber gig card slot 5 intel 100mb card slot 4 primary fiber loop One 7 x 18gb fiber shelf, one volume. I can't seem to get more than 10MB througput a little worse than on the 100mb card. The cpu numbers drop but so far the gig card isn't a big win. I've tested from a sun 420 with a syskonnect fiber gig card in the fast pci slot. I've played with about every combo of negotiation, etc. Tested with a cisco 6408 gig card in a cisco 6509 switch and also tested card to card with just a fiber cable. Even though Networker might support DAR, does OnTap? I did some research on this a while back (so my info may be dated), but my understanding is this: The backup server initiates the NDMP command to the Filer (or other NDMP device), the OS on that device then begins to send data to tape by using means that it is aware of. In the case of OnTap, it uses the typical Unix dump command. With dump/restore, there is no index created, thus, to recover, one has to scan from the beginning of tape of the first tape in the dump set until the data is found (on whatever tape). And the user waiting for the file will likely hope that their file is closer to the first part of the first tape rather than the last part of the last tape. Netbackup & Networker will have an index knowing which NDMP tape set that a file is on, but I would guess that they would have no idea as to which tape in the set it is - or where on that tape (set: being number of tapes for that night's incremental, full, whatever). If I'm off base, please clarify. You cannot uses Netbackup to backup other systems when the drives are directly attached to the NetApp Filer. You can only backup NetApp servers with it period with Netbackup 3.4. I am not sure if it is planned for 4.5 or 5.0 release to change this. Also Netbackup and Legato do not play well together when sharing tape devices. It sounds as though you have some drives specifically set for Legato but are trying to use them with Netbackup too??. Netbackup wants control of the drives and will not be able to know when Legato is done using the drives and vice versa with Legato not knowing about Netbackup. "Semaphore timeout period" error on Win2K server connecting to CI FS filer

Hello; Am experiencing this strange, intermittent problem from one of our Windows 2000 (SP2) servers that has adapter teaming on it (2 x 10/100MB NICs) where when trying to access a F760 CIFS filer (ONTAP 6.1R1P1D9). It will time out when trying to access the filer by NetBIOS name (i.e. Start/Run... \\<filername>) or IP Address and when trying to map a drive to it via a command prompt the error message "System Error 121 Occurred. The semaphore timeout period has expired.". Trying to access by IP address of the filer also times out (so it isn't WINS - one of my favorite things to whip - that would be the culprit...), though the filer responds to pings. Access to all other NT 4.0 and Win2K servers is unaffected, and runs quickly. After a period of about 5 minutes or so, the slowness goes away and things return to normal for a few weeks or a month when accessing the filer. I've scowered the Microsoft and NOW site to little avail, but did find some similarities in some newsgroups about others having problems with a Win2K server with adapter teaming, with the slight difference that they were having trouble accessing a Samba share. It may be that there is an IRQ conflict on the Win2K server, which I am verifying with the vendor (HP). That's about all I have to go on at the moment, unfortunately. Concerning the failure to unload tapes on a DLT7000. I have a number of DLT7000 and DLT8000 libraries connected to Filers. I use Legato Networker and it requires setting high timeouts for eject sleep, unload sleep, mount sleep, etc., to work properly.
