Here's a tidbit from the white paper: "Note: Selecting the "Run in separate memory space" option is generally not recommended outside of ASP development. Enabling this option causes excessive overhead by way of duplicate change/notify requests for each process on the remote machine specified in the Network Directory field. This is true not only for NetApp filers, but also for any machine that IIS accesses in this manner. IIS 5 presents a third option (now under the heading of Application Protection) called medium (pooled). This works for us. We've found that if we disable 'Cache ISAPI applications' for the entire web server, the load on our filer and out web servers spikes way, way up. ISAPI caching dramatically increases performance. I just wish that IIS was smart enough to look at something as simple as the 'changed date' on a file to see if it should reload it into cache. All, I'm a little confused about what I need in order to run this tool. I've installed SSQM but it tells me that the quota's haven't been turned on (they have). I installed SSAM but have not run it. If all it does is add NT users to the filler:/etc/passwd and quotas files then this has already been done. What am I doing wrong? ndmpcopy copies data over the loopback device. If i remember right, loopback data is also accounted to network traffic in sysstat. ndmpcopy and sysstat

Hi, When running ndmpcopy, copying data localy, on an idle machine, I notice that when running sysstat I see that while there is intensive disk activity there is also intensive network activity of similar magnitude. I assumed that all the data would remain local on the netapp without any attempt of data going over the net. Can someone explain.

Not exactly. You can't do it on the command line, but the ndmpcopy utility does what you are looking for. You take a client and run ndmpcopy with the source and destination being the same filer. This effectively does a dump | restore on the same filer (it acutally uses the loopback interface, which is effectively the same thing). Since the data doesn't go through the client, it doesn't really matter what the client is or the network connectivity to the filer. I've done this with a SPARC 10 with a 10BT connection to the filer. The only traffic that comes back to the client are occasional status packets so that ndmpcopy can update you every 5 minutes. So the functionality is possible, just not exactly how you would expect to execute it. ndmpcopy is available at ndmp.org or from the NOW site. RE: UNIX GID and NTFS Security Style Qtree

When a file has NTFS security the NT account information is used to validate access to that file. In an NTFS qtree all files normally have NTFS security, so that is how the checking is done. Is there any reason you don't want to have the mapped NT accounts as members of the appropriate NT groups which you can then use to set the security? convert from User Quota to Qtree Quota ?

Hi, I have a 400GB volume with 350GB of data for 35 projects running 5.3.7R2 All projects are currently using user quota. I'd like to convert them to qtree quota to have several users working in the same directory. I have vol1/projects/prj1, vol1/projects/prj2, ..., vol1/projects/prj35 I'd like to create rsh filer "qtree create /vol/vol1/prj1" rsh filer "qtree create /vol/vol1/prj2" ... rsh filer "qtree create /vol/vol1/prj35" but then how do I move my data from vol1/projects/prj1 to vol1/prj1, from vol1/projects/prj2 to vol1/prj2, ... from vol1/projects/prj35 to vol1/prj35. (I tried a simple "mv vol1/projects/prj1/* vol1/prj1", but it complained about cross-device links...) The volume has only 50GB free (snapshot is 20%) Thanks, -- Gilles-Eric DESCAMPS

According to the documentation for ONTAP 5.3, UNIX groups are not used in the mapping from a UNIX identity to a CIFS identity when accessing a NTFS security style qtree. Does anyone happen to know of a way that we can circumvent this problem so that we can have the NTFS qtree recognize and except a UNIX accounts gid. Thanks in advance, K.
