SnapDrive makes an API call to expand the NTFS partition and file system within it. (It grows the LUN first.) This can be done with Exchange running. We demo this all the time.

you have to have configured your volumes as "dynamic disks" in Windows first, however.
you cannot expand "basic disks" on the fly.

This might be true for a normal Windows disk. My LUNs are marked as 'Basic' within the Computer Management MMC and I have never changed this to expand the volume.

Interesting.
Can you post your process and config (version of win/exc, etc)??
Thanks, Paul
Apologies.
I took word from a MS admin as fact. Just did some research myself and determined myself (and hence the afore mentioned admin) to be wrong.
Paul
Unless something has changed, I do not think SnapDrive supports Dynamic disks...only Basic (like I said though, this may have changed somewhere in 4.x or even 5.0)

To further that point, MS doesn't support Dynamic Disks on iSCSI.
SnapDrive makes a call to expand the LUN on the filer, then calls the VDS\LDM service to expand the partition. You can use diskpart to do this manually as well. This works well with Basic Disks and SnapDrive doesn't support Dynamic Disks either.

Much more than a convenient GUI…much more!
“hot” expansions using W2K3 diskpart tool and so on are not so “hot”…sometime a reboot is required and a conversion to dynamic disk, not supported (but working) on iSCSI.
SD 5 has new features that can resolve the block overallocation when LUNs are formatted NTFS, SD can use the “vol options extent on” that must be applied on each volume hosting LUNs for Exchange (avoiding fragmentation and others).
SD can recognize a mirrored volume ordering a mirror update in case of needing, can be scripted and scheduled and so on…
Furthermore is a must to use Snapmanager suites

Of course you can. In w2k3 for sure. You do not even need SnapDrive for this, it just adds convenient GUI to do it.

you have to have configured your volumes as "dynamic disks" in Windows first, however.
you cannot expand "basic disks" on the fly.
