Several people have made some good suggestions, and I would advise you look at the white papers on the Netapp site as well. One thing that will improve things for Solaris in particular is to specify DISK_ASYNC_IO=false in the Oracle parameter file (init.ora). Solaris will not do async i/o correctly, and each async i/o request will take extra time. When you do this, you may want to use multiple DB writer processes. Finally, how are you loading the data? If you are using SQL*Loader, it may be that the SQL is slowing you down. Direct path loading should show a dramatic change if you are not using it already. Just an FYI, it is generally going to be counter productive to have table and index data on different volumes oin the Filer. Because of the way the Filer does I/O to the disks, it generally does not help to seperate things that way. By having more drives in a volume, performance will improve. Although it sounds like your problem is just getting the data out of the Oracle engine and to the Filer (hence the direct path loading should help that). -tom

How many users ?. 1GB may be not be enough. Rather then splitting the using of the Gigabyte you might like to consider Trunking with Roundrobin. I am given to understand that Solaris 8 offers performance improvements over 7. Any pointers on a device that allows SSH instead of telnet for on-net access? E.g., ssh to the console server and then connect to the serial interface of a connected device? Are you using the SBUS or PCI cards in the Sun. We have used both and found the SBUS cards to perform poorly as compared to the PCI cards. I don't remember what our peak nfs ops were, but I'm sure we were getting better results than what you are experiencing. Did you use the Oracle white paper at http://www.netapp.com/tech_library/3047.html to setup the database on the filer? Agreed. You can't want more than 1 inode per 4K WAFL block, right? This application generates reports by generating directories. Each report can generate hundreds of directories on the filer. I don't know why it works this way but I'm told changing it will be quite a headache. So, all these directories take up lots and lots of inodes, but no real space on the filer. What are the contents of these inodes? One would normally expect every inode to have at least one 4K block of data associated with it unless 1. It is a regular file with length <= 64 bytes (fits in the inode). 2. It is a symbolic link with length <= 64 bytes (ditto). 3. It is a device, or socket, or named pipe, or some other implictly zero-length object. That is presumably the rationale behind NetApp's "you can't possibly want more than 1 inode per 4 KB of data, can you?" upper limit. We just upgraded all of our mirror filers (630's and 760's) to v6.1 and one of our development (760) filers to v6.1 and have seen no problems in the past few weeks (knock wood). The more nice features that are added it seems the more I want, for instance SnapMirror now states Transferring (0% complete, 100MB done), but what would really help is knowing how much needs to transfer and an estimation on how long it will take at the current rate. Overall, it is a big step forward from the 5.x days, and I must admit working with Network Appliance Filers is actually fun! single mode trunc with a direct connection to unix host

Good day folks, we have ordered an F740 that we will be attaching to a M80 IBM aix host. with the Filer /unix host connection, we are planning to use a GB ethernet and 100 mbps ether card, with the 100 mbps card as the backup. We are exploring the possiblity of using a single mode trunk virtual interface. we are going to hook up the filer and the host direct with out the use of a switch and this will be a local dedicated network between the filer and the host. has anybody used a similar configuration and got it to work. the problem is that the IBM host has to be able to figure out which connection it will be talking to the filer and switch to the secondary if the primary fails. we will set the ether GB card as the favored path. regards, Luis Santos Loblaws Co.
