Hi Kunihiko, The dump utility on a NetApp filer can only move data to a tape drive which is directly attached to a filer. It can not move data to a tape drive which is attached to a Sun server. If you wish to leave the tape drive attached to your Sun 450, you will need to buy a software package which can control that. Some of the backup packages which will allow you to move data from the filer, to the tape drive attached to the Sun are : WorkStation Solutions- Quick Restore v2.7; Syncsort - Backup Express v2.1.3; Bakbone - Netvault 6.03; Legato- Networker 6.0.1 with SnapImage v1.5. Actually, is there any reason you *couldn't* hook a modem up to the console port? I used to hook modems up to the console ports of old UNIX systems all the time in my early days of tech support. The console port is just a serial port, and the modem is just a serial interface device. I don't see why you couldn't hook a modem up to a console port and as long as you got the cabling right and configured the modem right it should work. Today you want to leverage your network to do things. I think that filers should have an option to hook a modem directly up to the console port, but the usefulness of such a feature is pretty limited. The product design is network centric. In the old days the network used to be unreliable. Today's switched netwoorks are probably the mostreliable part of the computing infrastructure. Except of course for your filers ;-)

It works fine here - all you need is to have the remote shell daemon (rshd) running on the Sun box, with the NetApp filer allowed to run commands as root ("netapp.network root" in root's .rhosts file). Alternatively, you could do something like: rsh netapp dump 0u / > /dev/rmt/0 - the output of the netapp's 'dump' command will be sent to standard output, which goes to the tape drive. We don't currently support the Windows File Replication Service RPCs, but if all the servers in question are filers you should be able to achieve the same effect using DFS + SnapMirror. Sorry, I misunderstood. NTFS is Microsoft's proprietary filesystem. NetApp has no plans to replicate it. We do have an add-on product called SnapMirror(tm) which I think might do what you want. Your sales rep should be able to help you with this. I'm not an NDMP dude, so I don't know, but perhaps others on this list can tell you whether scripts and ndmpcopy are also an alternative. Maximum number of inodes

Hi, I know filers by default won't get a volume more than, say, 33 million inodes, and that the general formula for determining the number of inodes is (volume size in kilobytes) / 32 kb = #of inodes. But, does anyone know if there is a maximum number of inodes? Does anyone out there have volumes with over 200 million inodes and have you seen any issues with those types of volumes? We've got an application that's generating about 5-10 million inodes a month (don't ask) and I'm concerned about that. Will this be a problem? Thanks! Tom
