Just wanted to get some feedback regarding Syncsort's Backup Express running on Tru64 4.0f. We are considering acquiring a Network Appliance filer and need strong NDMP support and this product seems to have good support of both, but I would like to know what the rest of you think?

This should work, the difference between doing that and doing ndmpcopy is that by doing dump|restore via rsh, you are actually pumping the data through the client. That's fine..as long as you have a beefy client and a big pipe between the filer and the client. The nice thing about ndmpcopy is that it keeps the traffic within the filer (on the loopback interface). So either way works, take your pick. We run Tru64 4.0f with various Oracle databases from 7.3.4 to 8.1.7. I am researching acquiring a filer, probably an F840, to host the datafiles for some of my databases, as well as other file types such as Lotus Notes .nsf files, generic user file sharing, etc. I'm presently sustaining a combined 30 MB/Second with over 600 Transactions/Second over periods of an hour or more according to 'collect -T' on my UNIX boxes. I would mount the datafiles via nfs over GigE using an rsize/wsize of 8192 (the maximum for our version of Tru64) to two different servers, one for each database. I would run the fiber from each server through a 6509 and probably trunk two lines together from the switch to the filer. Any comments on the architecture, such as the Cisco trunking? Any comments on Oracle on a filer? Any comments on Tru64 with a filer? Any comments on my throughput requirements? Am I crazy? I really appreciate all of your help. It's very hard to prove that all the pieces will work right without hearing a little bit from everyone about their individual "real-world" experiences with the above. Here's a tidbit from the white paper: "Note: Selecting the "Run in separate memory space" option is generally not recommended outside of ASP development. Enabling this option causes excessive overhead by way of duplicate change/notify requests for each process on the remote machine specified in the Network Directory field. This is true not only for NetApp filers, but also for any machine that IIS accesses in this manner. SecureShare Quota Mngr

All, I'm a little confused about what I need in order to run this tool. I've installed SSQM but it tells me that the quota's haven't been turned on (they have). I installed SSAM but have not run it. If all it does is add NT users to the filler:/etc/passwd and quotas files then this has already been done. What am I doing wrong?
