Another solution while waiting for netbackup and dar to come about- if you are using the filer in an nfs environment, you can nfs mount the directories / volumes. We've been doing this for the past 2 years and have good performance - we also run the backups over a separate backup lan running gig. When you run the backup, the filer sends "file history" information to the NDMP client. This information allows the NDMP client (Legato, Veritas, WorkStation Solutions, ArcServe, etc) to create the index of files in the backup _and_ their location in the backup stream (byte offset). Meanwhile, the NDMP clients also track the amount of data written to each tape. So, when you do a DAR, the NDMP client tells the NDMP server (e.g. the filer) the list of files it wants restored and the offsets of those files. The filer and the NDMP client cooperate to load and position the tape to those offsets. At each offset, the filer will extract the data and restore the requested file. Which means: A) If you run an NDMP backup without file history (i.e. indexing) you can't run a direct access restore. B) To run a DAR, you need the functionality from the client and server. C) DAR is _possible_ using NDMP V2, V3, and V4 (all these versions support file history and the other commands necessary for DAR) D) Data Ontap 6.0 and greater supports DAR. Using Cricket to Monitor Filers

Hello Toasterites, I've been playing (fighting with) Cricket on and off for awhile now. It strikes me as a tool that could be alot of help *if* you understand how it thinks. This is were I fall short. I've never gotten Cricket to work like it ought to, and it seems, IMHO, to be a poorly documented app. Most instructures and howto's simply tell you to "edit file blah and your done!". Hi, I have been requested to provide storage from the filer to a department running Japanese environment (Caelum application on HP-UX Japanese Locale). As far as I know, I need to create a separate volume and set the vol lang to ja. Is there anything else I need to be aware of before I go ahead? Question on gig slot assignments and fiber card assignments

I have a netapp f760 clustered running 6.01R3 with the following slot assignments: slot 9 nvram slot 8 cluster interconnect slot 7 redundant fiber loop slot 6 intel fiber gig card slot 5 intel 100mb card slot 4 primary fiber loop One 7 x 18gb fiber shelf, one volume. I can't seem to get more than 10MB througput a little worse than on the 100mb card. The cpu numbers drop but so far the gig card isn't a big win. I've tested from a sun 420 with a syskonnect fiber gig card … [View More]in the fast pci slot. You cannot uses Netbackup to backup other systems when the drives are directly attached to the NetApp Filer. You can only backup NetApp servers with it period with Netbackup 3.4. I am not sure if it is planned for 4.5 or 5.0 release to change this. Also Netbackup and Legato do not play well together when sharing tape devices. It sounds as though you have some drives specifically set for Legato but are trying to use them with Netbackup too??.
