Multi mode trunk on different switch

Hi Everyone, Have anyone ever tried to configure multi mode vif on two different cisco switch using Ontap 6.2? Instead of one passive, one active trunk, is there a way to configure the vif to have a load balancing on different switch? question on exportfs on ONTAP

HI: Is there a way to split the entry line in /etc/exportfs om netapp filer? The client is getting panic errors because the exportfs entry is too big! Thanks Bob

Chris, This is a common error on the F760 motherboards. This error means that the NVRAM of your onboard FC controller is bad. If you are using a PCI card at this point, you can ignore the error. We always fix these errors by replacing the motherboard, but you really don't have to if you aren't using the onboard FC controller. rampant disk failure

I have recently seen surge in the number of disk failures on an F760 cluster in our datacenter. We have four F760's purchased a few months apart; one cluster has seen 12 disks fail in the past three months while the other cluster has seen two disks fail (I can only actually remember one, but I'm allowing for my failing memory as well). The clusters sit only a few feet apart so I am discounting environmental problems. Both clusters are running NetApp Release 6.1R1P1. The "bad" cluster is using mostly Seagate ST318203FC 18 GB disks, while the "good" cluster is mostly the Seagate ST118202FC drives (the infamous spin-up problem disks). The good cluster is unbalanced; one head has 52 disks and the other has 32. The bad cluster is evenly balanced (or it was before we started losing disks en masse) with 42 on each side. Both clusters are running disk firmware NA10 for the ST318203FC disks (I know, I just discovered that it's one rev out of date) and NA27 for the ST118202FC disks. The strangest part of this whole situation is that the disks rarely fail; they disappear and the partner complains that there is a cluster mismatch, breaks clustering, and sends out an email. The filer with the missing disk starts to rebuild (if it was a data disk) or merrily goes on its way (if it was a spare), but nothing ever shows up as broken. The disk just disappears. Short of going through and replacing every piece of hardware in the "bad" filers, I am at a loss of how to proceed. I've spent the morning searching NOW without luck. [Someone just pointed out to me that we have a few X221_ST318304FC disks with NA06 firmware in several of our filers, not just the good and bad clusters I've been describing, opening us up to bug 27068 (we're trying to schedule downtime to upgrade the firmware on all our filers now).] I am going to try upgrading the disk firmware on the filers as a first step, but if anyone else has seen this problem, or something similar, I would appreciate any input. One of my F760 filers spits this out on bootup: Thu Jan 1 00:00:00 GMT [ispfc_init_0:error]: Unrecognized NVRAM signature on Fibre Channel adapter 0a. disable boot menu

If, like in my situation, you need to constantly move data between 2 production filers over GB pipe, ndmpcopy is a clear winner speed-wise. Igor

If the development data is on a separate volume from the production data you can do a volcopy which works quite well. There is an option to turn up the throttle of the volcopy to 10 (max) on source filer. The destination volume must be offline when the data is being copied and it will write over anything on the destination volume. If the dev and prod data is on the same volume, I've always used tar and directed the output to a nfs mounted filesystem from another filer. volcopy does work well, the destination volume blocks are copied identically to the source volume. One benefit of using ndmpcopy is that the data is written contiguously which will eliminate any fragmentation. What is the preferred method of moving directories between filers? I was wondering what method the toaster community in general preferred. In the past I have used tar from my UNIX admin host, rsync, dump/restore, ndmpcopy, and cp. I have about given up on ndmpcopy because even across GbE, I see better thruput using tar or dump/restore. A couple of the admins I've spoken to swear by rsync, but I have only used it sparingly. I have a clustered pair of F760s, one filer for a production database and the second for a development database. Originally, both the production and development work was on the first filer, but space for production work began to run low. We are now moving development data off the production filer onto the development filer and we want to minimize the impact to the production filer while moving the data in a timely manner to the development system. The filers are on the same backup GbE LAN, so the network connection between the two is stable and fast. Any thoughts, opinions, or war stories greatly appreciated.
