There is command line utility that works from an NT Workstation. It shows the open files and it closes the files if you want. It also shows the file id and user who has it opened. It is called NETFILE.EXE. I am not sure if it shareware but you can try to e-mail brian(a)keene.net for a copy. Share Connection State after Renaming the Directory

Hi NetApp Toasters: I am having an issue with a Share Connection that still stays connected after renaming the subdirectory that the share is using. For example if c:\vol\vol1\test is shared out as sharetest on filer1 and the test directory is renamed to c:\vol\vol1\test.old the share is still accessible. You should get an error that the share is not accessible. The only way around this is to stop the share and recreate it. In fact I thought it might be the workstation cache so I reboot the workstation and the same thing happens. I also tried this on several workstation OS's - NT 4.0, XP Prof. and Win2K but they all have no problem connecting. In Windows NT you get an Error Message that the share is not accessible if you rename the directory. If anyone has any information that would be great Thanks David

What I do when I get occasional reports of locked files is use a combination of "cifs sessions *" and "lock_dump -f". The cifs sessions command often shows files held open, and for some occasions where it doesn't the lock_dump command always has. Between those two commands I've always been able to identify the computer and user that has the file open. It's possible this information doesn't include nfs locks. I've never had a case of an NFS user interfering with other access to the file so it's never come up. (NFS locking is for the most part not enforced.) Greetings toasters! Looking for a way to list files that are in use on the filer and who is using them. I want an output similiar to what you would see if you went into Windows Server Manager, selected the server and clicked on the "In Use" button, but I want something more user friendly than scrolling down looking for the file name. Specifically, we are having problems with users leaving files open, which prevents us from writing over them. I'm looking for a way to quickly track down who has this file open so they can be flogged, keel-hauled, then drawn and quartered. Your thoughts, please? LED on drives flashes from green to red

I'm just wondering if this is normal and why it happens. I've recently been put in charge of admin'ing several F760s and am just starting to learm my way around them. I've noticed that some times the green LED will flash red for just a second and then back to green. This is on drives that are in use and getting quite a bit of I/O. Thanks Dan

The only issue I have ever ran into is with Networker. If you need to a restore for more than 1024 files you can not use DAR. The work around is to turn off DAR, rerun the restore and it works fine. Just keep in mind the restore will be slow because you will have to walk through the tapes sequentially until the files are fond. What kind of problems are you having? I have not had any major issues with either Networker NDMP or Netbackup NDMP. Hello Prem, Yes, ndmpcopy can be used for data migration, and it works with full volumes, qtrees and even plain directories. But no single file ndmpcopies yet. Regardless of the granularity of your dataset to be copied, a limited number of incrementals are supported as well, so you will have to check the man page along with the ndmpcopy utility you are using for this. BGS Best1's data collector has now apparently been combined with BMC Patrol so that (despite my personal dislike for Patrol) it might be a goer. TBYB. Alternatively simply using the various *stat's with some noddy bits of perl or shell-script will give useful date/time-stamped tables which you can then graph using spreadsheet software or gnuplot, and are quite amenable to importing into databases or packages like SAS. RRDTool is also a likely candidate for the kind of performance-tracking trending and capacity planning that you might want to do. RRDTool doesn't collect data though, just helps you work with time-based data. -- -Mark ... an Englishman in London ...
