DataONTAP and Solaris 8 NIS Update

Toasters- A rather interesting update for everyone on the problem I posted yesterday with an 880c and FAS960c clusters that refused to bind to a Solaris 8 NIS server. Just to help us isolate the problem between OS and NIS, we initialized a Solaris 2.6 system, as a NIS slave to the Solaris 8 NIS server that we couldn't get the filers to bind to. Surprisingly, the FAS960c bound with no problems to the Solaris 2.6 NIS slave. To us, this rules out a configuration issue with the NIS domain itself and focuses the problem back to an apparent Solaris 8 NIS/DataONTAP incompatibility. I was somewhat surprised that no one replied that they are using Solaris 8 NIS with DataONTAP. I have updated the tech support case I have opened with both Sun and NetApp and I'll keep the list informed as the solution moves along. Thanks, Brent Killion

Hi, Yes I agree to the problem you are facing. Try creating an account for the filer in the domain. wait for the replication to happen and thenm run cifs setup. You shd be fine. But i assume that the filer by running cifs setting even when the account is not precreated has the ability to create a computer account for itself. You can find that option in the gui mode of admin http://<name_of_filer>/na_admin. Also pl check with your admins if you are a member of account operators (just a guess). FYI, If the win2k domain is in native mode, then your best bet would be to downgrade to 6.3, run cifs setup, join the domain and reupgrade to 6.3.1. Actually there is a i feel so, a bug in version prior to 6.3 in which the filers cannot join to the native win2k domain using fqdn eg abc.rest.com. I doesnt just understand the native doman properly. It shd be a problem. We have done this on our couple of filers to make em properly talk to Win2k native domain. Hope this helps... I think netapp shd do something about it. Hey Toasters, I have a F810 that has 14 36G hard drives and a fiber gige interface which goes to a gigabit switch. I have a PC with dual AMD 2400, with an Intel Pro/1000 card going to the switch. The PC runs RH 7.3(2.4.20-ac2) To test out the performance of the F810 and the Gige card on the pc i was copying some large files from the netapp to /tmp on the pc. This is sysstat 1 on the filer when copying 2 600 MB file at the same time. My question(finally) * The NetApp CPU % busy when copying 2 files doesnt seem to be as high when copying 1 file. The Net KB out dont seem to be as high either ? This seem contrary to intuition. I am not expecting to see double the CPU % and double the Net KB out...i would like to atleast see it higher. :) Thanks.

I know that both of my 760's came with PCI FCALs and terminators on the on-board (no orange stickers). Solaris 2.8 NIS and DataONTAP

Toasters- Has anyone seen any difficulty in getting a F880c running 6.2.2 to bind to a NIS domain running on a Solaris 8 NIS master? We have an F880c that plays very nicely when bound to a NIS server running Solaris 2.6. We built a new NIS domain, with a new name, running on Solaris 8 but the F880c systems refuse to bind to the new domain when following the standard DataONTAP commands. We're pretty confident that the new NIS domain config isn't the problem as we have 75 other Solaris systems of the flavor of 2.6, 7, and 8 bound to it with no problems. Here is the relevant portion of the snoop output when snooping the interface on the NIS server. I see the call from the filer "filer2" to the NIS server "dvniss" but the NIS server refuses to answer it's bind request. This just repeats over and over every time the filer sends a bind request. {root}on dvniss< snoop filer2 Using device /dev/dmfe (promiscuous mode) filer2 -> dvniss NIS C DOMAIN_NONACK pwcorp filer2 -> dvniss NIS C DOMAIN_NONACK pwcorp filer2 -> dvniss NIS C DOMAIN_NONACK pwcorp Can anyone shed any light on what we may be missing? A search of now.netapp.com revealed no similar problems and Sun has validated our NIS configuration. Thanks to all, Brent Killion

We are soon to start SnapMirroring our Oracle databases and I'm looking for some tried-and-true best practices. Where are your files stored? How often do you SnapMirror them? Have you tested disaster recovery? Any and all information would be greatly appreciated.
