Veritas 4.5 supports remote NDMP
I think it requires a dedicated drive.

There is a way to use NDMP over ethernet versus the SCSI\FCAL with
Veritas NBU. Not sure if it requires a dedicated drive however.
Possibly worth a look. I think it is called Remote NDMP.

As a number of people have pointed out, one option is to mount the
filer onto the veritas media/master server via NFS or CIFS and then
backup the volume. I figured on this as a fall-back option. I was
hoping to find another mechanism, via NDMP on the server, to get past
this.
