It all depends on the workload that you want to perform across the volumes contained within those populations of drives. You may, or may NOT see a difference. Reliability isnt a huge issue, since Raid-DP and an active support contract take care of the 100% failure rate that -all- hard drives eventually achieve. I have about 800 300GB drives across a bunch of FAS980s and R200s and about 400 144GB drives across a bunch of F880s/FAS960s/FAS270s according to DFM. Throughput seems fine, although I have done any specific benchmarks. The high density reduces space/power/cooling requirements, which has its own benefits. ndmp and LTO-3 Drives

Anyone on the list using NDMP with SAN attached LTO-3 drives and veritas netbackup? The question I have can the software keep the data spooling fast enough to the tape drives and not let them shoe-shine? How many data streams are you using? How much data are you getting backed up per hour? Have you tried a DR restore of the data and what was the timing? We are in the process of upgrading to NB 5.1 and adding LTO-3's to the L700 robot and currently connect to a pair of clustered 980s and 960s. Thanks in advance - jcc James C. Another possibility is the queue depth specified on the driver. How many disks do you have behind the LUN on the filer? A good rule of thumb is: anything below 1 outstanding IOP per physical disk is ok. Since this is iSCSI, it may also be a networking problem...
