Marge, Take a look at Knowledge Base article KB4998 on the NOW site. It has all the information you need to decide when and how to defragment volumes and LUNS. In a nutshell, use Windows utilities to defragment a NTFS LUN and use reallocate (ONTAP 7) or wafl scan reallocate (ONTAP 6.x and earlier) for volumes and files. When you delete the file, the blocks are eventually freed provided that there are no snapshots holding onto these blocks. If the data was already contiguous, then you should have 10GB of contiguous free space. If the files were not, then... you get the picture. WAFL does a very good job of keeping fragmentation out of the picture - however, if the filesystem fills up, this causes problems. Hi, does anybody know if there is a way to use snaprestore to recover a qtree out of a snapshot without doing so much manual work?? We are currently in a need for this. Snapshot is free. You can use it to do restores, but it's a very manual process. Snapshot saved my butt many times when I was a customer. SnapRestore is a licensed product that makes large and/or complex restores a simple process. Unlike other vendors that "bolt on" features, all of NetApp's features are built into the OS and only need to be licensed to turn on. Basic Snapshot capabilities do not require a license. You can config the system to take automatc snapshots via the snap sched command or through FilerView. You can also take snapshots on an ad hoc basis with the snap create command or via scripts using RSH or SSH. SnapRestore is a licensed feature. you only need a SnapRestore license when you want to be able to restore a complete volume if you are satisfied with copying files out of the ~snapshot environment SnapRestore is obsolete...
