Re: FAS3050 and Oracle over NFS - recommendation needed

I had a bizarre issue setting up Oracle over NFS. I had to set some off-color nfs options. If I recall, the only way I could get ORACLE to setup and finish setup over NFS was to introduce the "llock" option on *any* NFS related mount points for oracle. I am sure I was missing something, since in the past it was never difficult, but after spend many install/reinstall phases, it was the only thing I could find that worked and Oracle was not helpful at all. After the DB was created, i could go back and remove the llock on some of the mounts, but not the mounts where the actual DB was. This was the same for Solaris 9 & 10. Whats a decent amount of free space in regards to this? 80%? 85%? 90%? Also are we talking about at the volume level, or aggregate level? Freeing disk space does not increase "fragmentation" in WAFL. The way WAFL is designed, if you have a decent amount of free space then WAFL is able to write data efficiently and hence read it back later efficiently. If you have enough free blocks, then WAFL can localize a disk writing episode to a small number of RAID stripes, which is more efficient than scattering writes over many RAID stripes, because WAFL must update the parity for each RAID stripe that is changed. Note that each block in a RAID stripe is on a different disk, so writing a RAID stripe writes to numerous disks in parallel. Where you run into trouble is when you let an aggregate or traditional volume get nearly full. This means that free blocks are scarce and so WAFL must make do with whatever free blocks it can find. The free blocks may be scattered over many RAID stripes, which requires many more parity updates. This can also hurt read performance later when you want to read the data back (even though parity is not an issue when reading). Hi, We would like to upgrade 2 of our filers to DataOntap 7.3.0P3 and we would like to know the time it is going to take for the inode conversion. Details: F840.....6.4.4P8 (diskspace 5.4TB) FAS960.....6.4.4P8 (diskspace 20.2 TB) Also some of the volumes are around 90 - 95%. I appreciated your input....
