I know I can check by using wafl scan status. the problem is, we have a critical data on these filers and we would to have an estimate of how long the inode conversion will take to finish, is it 4H, 10h....etc. Thx. This is a 'rule of thumb' thing - and depends on the type of application to some degree.. For most workloads, WAFL does exceedingly well with 10% free space (90% used). For Exchange, the workload itself is horrible for fragmentation, so the rule of thumb is about 20% free space (80% used). As for volume\aggregate level, it shouldn't matter - the flexvol is more of a quota than anything else - if you have 10% free in the flexvol, then those same 10% (in KB) would be marked as 'used' in the aggregate but no data would be written to them. Likewise, if the flexvol is full, but there is 10% free space in the aggr, then you should be ok. Freeing disk space does not increase "fragmentation" in WAFL. The way WAFL is designed, if you have a decent amount of free space then WAFL is able to write data efficiently and hence read it back later efficiently. If you have enough free blocks, then WAFL can localize a disk writing episode to a small number of RAID stripes, which is more efficient than scattering writes over many RAID stripes, because WAFL must update the parity for each RAID stripe that is changed. Note that each block in a RAID stripe is on a different disk, so writing a RAID stripe writes to numerous disks in parallel. Where you run into trouble is when you let an aggregate or traditional volume get nearly full. This means that free blocks are scarce and so WAFL must make do with whatever free blocks it can find. The free blocks may be scattered over many RAID stripes, which requires many more parity updates. This can also hurt read performance later when you want to read the data back (even though parity is not an issue when reading). Re: FAS3050 and Oracle over NFS - recommendation needed

I had a bizarre issue setting up Oracle over NFS. I had to set some off-color nfs options. If I recall, the only way I could get ORACLE to setup and finish setup over NFS was to introduce the "llock" option on *any* NFS related mount points for oracle. I am sure I was missing something, since in the past it was never difficult, but after spend many install/reinstall phases, it was the only thing I could find that worked and Oracle was not helpful at all. After the DB was created, i could go back and remove the llock on some of the mounts, but not the mounts where the actual DB was. This was the same for Solaris 9 & 10.
