We just run an rsh "quota report" every 15 minutes an have a perl script send the emails. This solution becomes more portable if you decide to switch NFS appliances at some later point (but why would you!). We turn on wildcard quotas and get per user usage info too. Included a sample of the mail, [some company specific info stripped], that DFM sends when a User is over Quota. The mail is fully customizable. If, in the middle of the week, I restart the filer's disk quota system, then DFM will send these e-mails. Even if a full week has not elapsed. I have to be careful when adjusting quotas to avoid sending out too many alerts. This mostly happens when we adjust tree quotas. For user quotas, I have several default qtrees. To increase a user quota have been moving that H: folders to different qtrees to increase the quota. It's a bit kludgy but it appears to work okay for us (8,500 H: drives). I do not know if it's possible, in DFM, to have these messages sent in real-time. As people exceed their quotas. If you have an app that will read SNMP traps, it's probably possible to create a custom app that will do this. Hi there, I wanted to ask if a filer supports notification for users regarding the fill level of a volume. i know it's possible with external monitoring tools (nagios), but i need something like snmp traps or mails. thx, christian

With DFM it is possible to configure an SNMP trap, email or pager alert for a two thresholds (Nearly Full and Full thresholds). And these thresholds are configurable from DFM. Another thing which came into my mind is the use of DFM (Data Fabric Manager). This is a tool from Netapp and has the ability to collect a lot of information from your filers and present them via a web-interface and can sent out mails as well. Yeah, that's a front-end to nfsstat -l. There's also a lun_top in the ToolChest as well that does the equivalent for LUNs. Check and see if you have a "cifs top" command in ONTAP. I'm not sure what release introduced it, but it's on my 7.2 simulator, but I think it's older than that. I'd recommend the scheduled WAFL reallocates to help defrag. I'm curious about the fact they question the last time it was wafl_ironed - this looks for and fixes corruption, not poor layout. I'd start by monitoring performance - stats output\sysstat and statit. Perfstat (from the now site) is a good tool to collect a lot of data, but unless you've been working on filers for a number of years, it will be mostly gibberish (though some output is similar to what you'd find on unix systems). Greetings, I inherited a production F810 some time ago. It has since been replaced with a newer 3020C. During the 810->3020 data migration, I had severe NDMP enumeration latency. NetApp support inquired about various details on the 810, such as the last time it was wafl_ironed, etc. Indeed, the 810 had spun in production for years with minimal admin intervention. Apparently this contributed to the performance hit we took during our data migration. My question to the list is what are some 'best practices' for caring-and-feeding of a 7.x filer, ala preventative steps to take within OnTAP in order to prevent said problem from happening again in the future. Preferably steps to take on a live filer without interrupting service (impacting read/write/throughput ok, downed filer not).
