I'm not a Windows expert, but perhaps you can do it in a DOS window with "move" or "rename". Are you moving the data across qtrees? In this case, you are stuck with copy-then-delete. Thanks Michael, we have no NFS here, and even if we had, I would never try it out. First, I cannot imagine how NFS should work where CIFS does not while handling CIFS-data. The scond reason is, what happens to spaces, special characters, ... And third, wo should NFS handle the nested group permissions of CIFS. With Unix-schema owner/group/world the filer would calculate the permissions for the given user - and after the copy all detailed ACL-information would be lost. Hi again, of course robocopy is exactly the wrong tool. Using robocopy on any server will grant that all the data is transferred via LAN. And it has a lot of options like purge and mir, but it can never move data within a partition without really transferring them. A move within the same drive letter on a windows server will take less than a second because only the MFT is changed and no block of real data transfered. ndmpcopy would certainly work and be faster than a cifs file copy. Knut, I think you will find you can use wildcards with the mv command (mv /vol/vol1/data1/sub1/* /vol/vol1/data1 ß that would take EVERYTHING under sub1 and drop it under data1) Of course, as Michael mentioned this should be tested first either with the simlautor, or on a test vol. Also snap restore is no solution: If restore_as_path is specified, the path must be a full path to a filename, and must be in the same volume as the volume used for the restore. Files other than normal files and LUNs are not restored. This includes directories (and their contents), and files with NT streams. So you cannot restore directory X as directory Y. in-line tape copy possible ?

Hello, I haven't checked with Netapp yet, but would anyone here know if it is possible to have a ndmp backup going to two tape drives , thus creating a duplicate copy ? I have a dual port HBA for the tape drive(s) on a FAS3040 head with DOT 7.2.2. The drives are IBM LTO3s and the backup software is NetBackup version 6.0MP4. I would like to add a second tape drive on the the HBA and do the in-line tape copy rather then duplicating the data at a later time. Thanks, George Kahler York University

As a former TSE myself, I can think of some possible situations where a customer can have this feeling while the TSE has a legitimate request. For example, you must be absolutely sure that the problem is in fact occuring during the Perfstat and packet trace, or it's irrelevant. Ideally you would have control to duplicate the problem at will and then capture it. If not, we have to be 100 % sure of what we are looking at (and for). I don't know what the situation was and can't speak definitively for it. All I'm saying is that sometimes context and sequence can be the only difference in an otherwise complete duplicate request for output. If I gave it some more thought, I'd probably think of more similar examples, but I think this is a good illustration. I hope this helps. Cheers ..... If autosupport is working, then not, then working...this seems to me like busywork that will get the customer nowhere. Try this...try this, no?...then try this... I get _very_ frustrated when a TSE doles out any mitigation efforts without tellin me exactly why they are requesting it, and why they think it will work. In fact (now that I've digressed off-topic), my ideal support ticket would look like this: Me: here's the problem, and everything I've tried to fix it and the results, and an autosupport (I know in this case that's the problem!). NetApp: Thanks, we'll look into this and get right back to you. NetApp: This is what we think is happening.... NetApp: Try this _because_...: Me: No dice... NetApp: Ok...we'll get back to with an explanation, or escalate it and bump up the priority. Instead, typically I get this: Me: here's the problem, and everything I've tried to fix it and the results, and an autosupport. NetApp: Thanks. Can you send an autosupport, please? NetApp: Please try this, and send us the results, and send us the results? (what they ask for is everything I've already tried, and told them so). Me: Damn!
