I did a du on the directory and there is about 15GB of data with just over 3.8M files. I suspect this is a sub-optimal ratio but is it so bad that the metadata for the directory needs to be so large? If you are concerned about ease of mgmt I would go with NFS ass Jeff recommended, its as easy as VMDK files with out the overhead and additional points of failure (well, assuming IP storage at all). It might work for you, but the sort of random write IO that happens on an Oracle database doesn't do especially well through a VMDK. If there is a problem and you need Oracle's support, they may very well tell you to put it on a physical server before they will support you. 2. Theoretical mixing of disks

Hi all, I know the DS2246 supports both SSDs and SAS drives, and I know this is not recommended, but for the purposes of answering a hypothetical question posed to me, is it technically possible to mix ssds and sas drives in the same shelf? Thanks in advance, Nick

Flash Cache statistics question: Invalidate vs Evict?

I'm trying to analyze the performance of a Flash Cache (PAMII) module and can't seem to find a detailed definition of the "inval" and "evict" metrics. All the documentation simply states the obvious with the very unhelpful "blocks evicted/invalidated from cache per second". Both eviction and invalidation are removal of blocks from the cache, but what I want to know is why are they removed. Essentially what causes an eviction verses an invalidation? Is a block "evicted" because it was never used and a timer expired? Is a block "invalidated" when the cache is full and a useful block is thrown out to make room for a new block? how to set options.raid.timeout in ontap 6.5 to avoid filer reboot

Hi guys, i have a very old f840 without maintenance. I have the nvram battery broken. So in this case the parameter raid.timeout will stop the filer after the setted hours value. I have dataontap 6.5 There is a way to disable/avoid the filer reboot ? setting the value to 0 stop the filer immediately. There an infinite value to disable the halt ? Trouble booting an F740

An F740 that has been powered off for over a year has some data I would like to recover. The system boots, but complains about low nvram batteries, and halts. Is there a way I can bypass this shutdown to copy some things off? Fri Sep 9 16:30:53 EDT [mgr.boot.reason_ok:notice]: System rebooted after an internal halt. Fri Sep 9 16:30:53 EDT [monitor.nvramLowBatteries.notice:notice]: If the NVRAM batteries are dangerously low, the system shuts down automatically every 0 hours to encourage you to replace them. If you reboot the system it will run for another 0 hours before shutting down. (The 0 hour timeout may be increased by altering the "raid.timeout" value using the "options" command.) VSS providers and EMC NetWorker

EMC NetWorker as of 7.6.2 does not support hardware VSS providers for backup, but also has no facilities for selecting from multiple installed providers. Oh mighty toasters list, is anyone here using NetWorker for tape and also any of the SnapManager tools for any of the Microsoft applications, and if so, how do you do it and stay supported?
