snapshot behavior

I am using rsync to synchronize directories and have noticed (I think) the following behavior..... I created a snapshot on my filer and ran rsync from the snapshot directory to copy the files to a remote directory. The following day I mistakenly ran rsync from the same snapshot directory without taking a new snapshot. On almost all directories rsynced in this fashion there were no differences between the source and destination directories, as expected. However, in one directory rsync deleted the directory ".nfs18C041/" and all files and subdirectories of this directory from the destination file system, indicating that it had disappeared from the snapshot directory. A check of the two directories using find that was run between the execution of the two rsync commands showed that this directory was the only difference between the two directories other than symbolic link dates and directory sizes which we expected. Given the nature of the .nfs directory it occurs to me that removing this type of directory from snapshots when they disappear from the regular file system might be intentional. Does this seem reasonable or have I done something dumb and possibly misinterpreted what occurred? That couldn't be, could it? Thanks. Greg Kitch UCLA SEASnet Computing Facility

On Solaris an 'underflow' is an error due to a busy bus. How loaded is your system? What type of network are you on? Shared or Switched? The numbers of error that you are seeing are not condusive to having different duplex speeds at either end of your connection. If you are running a shared network, then you might be seeing 'backoff' errors. Errors when the shared segment is too busy. (Even though your number of collisions is showing as 0) If you are running a switched network.. then I don't know what the problem might be. I'd like to make all 7 of those disks spares for the 330s. This shelf is on a 220. I brought it up and tried to destroy the volume but am unable to destroy the root volume, since it can't be brought offline. Anyone know the correct procedure to do this, and is destroying the volume adequate for making these disks spares? Looks like your switch is in auto negotiate mode. Hard code the switch port to 100Mbs, full duplex. Run 'ifstat -z e3a' to reset your interface counters and look at it again. The hardware guide for your filer (downloadable from NOW) defines the pins on the console port, and the required terminal settings. The minimal required pins are: Pin 2 RxD Pin 3 TxD pin 5 Ground You need to set your emulator to 9600, 8 bits, no parity, XON/XOFF (or no flow control).
