Exchange on NetApp

Hi. I'm looking for anyone who is actually using their NetApp as the disk backend for Microsoft Exchange. How big is your data space? How are you connected (NetApp to Exchange) networkwise? How are you doing backups? We are looking at various options for growing our Exchange server, and some of the requirements include more, faster disk space; faster backup and recovery; recovery of individual mailboxes. A few brief questions

I'm doing some information gathering on NAS and would appreciate it if anyone could take the time to answer these few, very brief questions: 1. Approximately what percentage of your production data is actually used for cross-platform file sharing? 2. Please rank the following reasons for using NAS in terms of their order of importance to you (with "1" being the Most important; "3" the least important) a. Cross-platform file sharing b. Ease of use c. Cost 3. What concerns, if any, do you have about your Network Attached Storage? 4. Are you currently considering deploying SANs for your storage requirements? F330's EOL (not)

In recently dealing with requoting support for our mix of filers, I find that technically the F300's haven't been declared EOL. The thing is, last time we paid for support, they wouldn't let us purchase software support for the F330's beyond April 2000, but that has come and gone and I wonder how close Netapp is to ONTAP 5.4. I was told that they wouldn't let us get software support beyond then because no new versions of ONTAP would be available for the F330's. I had been told that as of ONTAP 5.4, SCSI based filers won't be supported, hence the EOL for the F330's. Clock size

The recent discussions on clocks brings to mind something that I have been wondering about for a while, namely what is the size of the clock in a filer. The reason why this is interesting is that filers happily set file times to 32 bit values and this is illegal unless the filer's clock is unsigned or greater than 32 bits. /Michael -- This space intentionally left non-blank.

In a clustered configuration, you will have two filers. In case one filer goes down, the other filer will take over the failing filer's disks so that data is still accessible. If there is a disk failure, RAID can take care of it. However, in case of a disk shelf failure, I think you are out of luck. C.P. Instead of reading & examining each block, as is done in the non-DAR selective recovery case, the tape agent (NDMP mover) uses "space block" operations to position the tape to the tape block in which each requested file begins. It iterates this (swap tapes if req'd, position to next file, recover file) operation until all requested files are recovered. Best, Jim

The data on the filer is cache data so it can be thrown out (i.e. not critical) but the machine has to be 24x7 machine. If any part of one of the machines die, it must stay up. Could someone please direct me where I can get White Papers on the subject of Oracle on NetApp filers? I have bunch of DBAs on my back considering buying their own filers but before they do they would like to see some papers on issues around placing Oracle on filers, specifically performance!
