Hello Hunter, I was communicating with you about years ago when I was going to buy my EMC clariion cx600. I bought that and I am using it for oracle and SAP using dual FC. What I really need your knowledge is a compare list or ad/dis-advantages of Network Appliance (netapps) over EMC SANs. I do not know who to trust and I need your independent idea about this. If you were to get one of these for your SAP environment, which one you would buy and also how to evaluate these two SAN dealers. I do not want to be the first genipeg to experiment with SAP/oracle/Linux/Netapps (our future target is Linux redhat). We are thinking to move from HPUX to Linux redhat for future of mysap ERP 2005, Oracle, package. Also: when this is done, we might have 2 or more EMC Symatrix to get rid of. The CX600 is referred to as a member of the CLARiiON (TM) family. It was introduced as a low cost alternative the EMC Symeterix. The CX600 in and of itself has no standalone function like a Filer, i.e. filer, FTP serve or Web page server. For example, the CX600 cannot act as a file server. do not abuse a filer as a door stopper! but get an iSCSI license, it's free create a virtual disk mount that from a Windows Server 'share that folder' works with Linux as well do not abuse a filer as a door stopper! I know people do it, and potentially the load on the server(s) could be less than mbox because you arent shovelling around huge files, but it seems like the netapp is a little slow with opening a larger number of files for reading one by one. By large I mean over a few thousand (three to 130 thousand I have tested with) and slow I mean between 200 and 500 headers read per second from nfs. It is only slow if the filer does not have it cached already, because followup folder opens get several thousand headers per second throughput, similar to mbox. I have not tried other nfs servers, but I have attempted to simulate the load from courier-imapd or dovecot using a shell script to read 2 dozen lines from each of several thousand mail files, and the delay seems to be the netapp. Additionally, if if is a fresh folder open (not cached anywhere), the first 2,000 or so message headers load quickly, it slows down to between 200-500/sec for the next few thousand, and if you let it get above several tens of thousands, it continues to slow even more, down to less than 100 headers per second. I am somewhat dissapointed that the NOW forums and documentation is pretty much devoid of any mention of Maildir, let alone tuning for it. I have a FAS940, not heavily loaded, and the clients for this are a small cluster of Dell Poweredge 2650 dual 2ghz xeons, running in pre-production environments of either Debian Linux or FreeBSD 6.x. The filer is running 7.0.3, and the files are stored in a flexvol in an aggregate spanning 3 DS14's full of disks (28x36, 14x72).

F720 Install

We have just received in donation a couple of FC9 shelves. I found a F720 on ebay for cheap and now I am attempting to start the things. I have got the units attached via the FC cable and booted to the 2 floppy disks provided but I can not seem to attach to the hidden share from my windows PC or mount the file system from a linux box. Am I missing something vital. I have also received all sorts of documentation that appears to be no help. thanks in advance, Basil Istwany

We also experienced some slowdowns and stutters on the clients when under load, even when re-reading the same file over and over again - indicating network-related problems (although it's a clean gig ethernet LAN). Switching to TCP made it all so much better in termns of performance. In terms of MUA performance I'd be wary of letting any old MUA load up "several tens of thousands" of headers as you could well find yourself experiencing heavy IO on the client running the MUA at that point due to paging or swapping. I know I experience slowdowns on my old-fashioned personal mail system which runs mbox format (at the moment) on an EXT3 filesystem, but it's simply a function of the mbox being so large that it's fragmented on disk and that the client MUA I run only has 256MB of RAM and has to do a lot with it! In tests you might find you need a lot of RAM on a system doing nothing but IMAP access in order to keep a level playing field. I'm not entirely sure you could do that much tuning on the filer which would be specific to Maildir format itself, to be honest. Hi I need some arguments for netapp vs Microsoft Windows Storage Server 2003 with eva8000. I now that the doesn't have snappvault, opensnapvault. But how is uptime with Microsoft Windows Storage Server 2003 and max volumes performens and so on? The arguments that we have is the cost otherwise, we are complete happy with our fas940 and r200.
