BCS ZCS benchmarking statistical data

I'm looking for any type of data that supports whether BCS drives perform better/worse than ZCS drives. In particular, I'd like to see benchmark read/write performance on F760 filers (using ONTAP 6.3.1R1) with FC9 volumes of purely 36GB ZCS or 36GB BCS drives and also volumes of purely 72GB ZCS or 72GB BCS. I looked through the NOW pages but couldn't find anything along these lines. It seems netapp has moved in the direction that all their newer/larger disks tend to be BCS(520) only or am I mistaken? If thats the case then where is the data to show why BCS is better than ZCS. Aside from the fact that you loose a slight amount of disk space on BCS drives what are the pluses? Is there less CPU overhead one way or another? Thanks, Steve

Just noticed the following message on my filer console: Tue Aug 12 14:33:33 EDT [CIFSVScan:warning]: Virus Scanner: pipe_CreatePipe failed [0xc000005e] This is followed by a disconnect message, and a registered message. It cycles through these messages over and over for one of my two registered scanning clients. I'm using Symantec Carrier scan. Anyone encounter this one? Thanks.

If you're for some reason not using virus protection, you could probably get away with this by enabling virus protection and setting it to only scan the extensions that you want to deny. I would except then that the filer would try to virus scan those files, fail to do so, then deny access to the files. That's a klugey way to do it though. yeah, we run a script like once every few days to get rid of mp3s in home directories (windows home directories) here it is: /opt/sfw/bin/gfind /soc_vol0/home -type f \( -name "*.mp3" -o -name "*.MP3" \) -print0 | /opt/sfw/bin/gxargs -0 rm -f > /dev/null 2>&1 Just replace paths.... Should be able to do the same for other extensions. However, this does take awhile to run....depending upon the number of users and home directories you have. hi, This might be quite a difficult thing to acheive and might also impact performance if you have to filter alot of files. You will be better of just doing a regular search on the filer for file the the .mp3 .mpeg etc and then deleting them. Hello Stephen, I would say it's Veritas-related, since while testing Atempo Time Navigator w/ NDMP, we could restore files elsewhere without overwriting the original ones. Just to moderate my answer: we take a tape backup of SnapVault data, so the data is read-only, and obviously, it can't be overwritten. But as far as I could see, I didn't notice anything that could allude to an overwriting of the original data. PS: why not upgrade to NetBackup 4.5 ? Hello, Is the following true for all implimentations of NDMP, or just for Veritas? This bit us because we went to restore some files, and the "unmark all" button did not, and we restored older files over newer. We now restore to a Restored_Files qtree for NetApp filers and let the users examine and move the data they want back. For NDMP restores, existing files are always overwritten, due to the nature of NDMP. On pages 46 and 47 in the NetBackup 3.4 NDMP System Administrator's Guide it says: "Caution: An NDMP restore always overwrites existing files." Thanks Stephen Darragh
